Government Considering Special Policy for CBSE Students Affected by West Asia Conflict

The Central Government has informed the Supreme Court that it is actively considering a dedicated policy for private students in West Asia whose CBSE board examination results could not be declared due to ongoing conflict and security concerns in the region. This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to affected students and safeguard their academic futures.

Broader Issue Acknowledged by Solicitor General

During the hearing held on Friday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta apprised the court that this is not an isolated case involving a single student but a widespread concern affecting numerous candidates. The government is examining the possibility of introducing a uniform policy that would apply equally to all impacted students across the affected countries. A final decision on this matter is expected shortly.

Next Hearing Scheduled for June 22

The vacation bench comprising Justice Augustine George Masih and Justice Vijay Bishnoi, which heard the matter, has scheduled the next hearing for June 22, 2026. The court is closely monitoring the situation and awaiting the government’s response regarding the proposed policy framework.

The petition was filed by Pranshu Jigarkumar Patel, a student residing in Saudi Arabia, who sought directions from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to declare his Class 12 improvement examination results. His plea highlights the urgent need for resolution as delayed results are hampering his higher education prospects.

Impact on Higher Education Admissions

The petitioner argued that the non-declaration of results is directly affecting his chances of securing admission to colleges and universities. Without timely results, students face the risk of missing admission deadlines and losing academic opportunities. The student further stated that he had made multiple representations to CBSE on May 17, May 21, and May 30, but received no response from the board.

Previous Attempts at Delhi High Court

Before approaching the Supreme Court, the student had sought relief from the Delhi High Court. However, the High Court declined to entertain the petition, prompting the student to escalate the matter to the apex court for intervention.

Examinations Canceled in Seven West Asian Countries

Amid rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, along with deteriorating regional security conditions, CBSE had canceled Class 12 board examinations in seven West Asian nations. The affected countries include:

  • Bahrain
  • Iran
  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Following the cancellation of examinations in these countries, CBSE implemented a special assessment mechanism for the affected students. However, certain categories of students, including those appearing for improvement exams, remain in a state of uncertainty regarding their results.

The Supreme Court’s intervention and the government’s willingness to formulate a comprehensive policy signal a positive development for students caught in challenging circumstances beyond their control. The upcoming hearing on June 22 will be crucial in determining the timeline and scope of the proposed relief measures.
