NEET UG 2026: Key Exam Updates Announced by NTA

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has unveiled a series of student-friendly modifications for the NEET UG 2026 examination, responding to feedback gathered from candidates over the years. These changes are designed to enhance the overall test-taking experience while maintaining the integrity and rigor of the medical entrance exam.

Extended Exam Duration

One of the most significant updates is the extension of the total examination time. Previously, candidates were allotted 180 minutes to complete the paper. For the 2026 cycle, this has been increased to 195 minutes, providing aspirants with a valuable additional 15 minutes to attempt questions.

The exam is scheduled to commence at 2:00 PM and will now conclude at 5:15 PM. The NTA has clarified that this extended window includes time for administrative formalities such as signing the attendance sheet and completing other procedural checks. The primary objective behind this adjustment is to ensure that administrative tasks do not eat into the time candidates have for solving questions. By building these formalities into the overall schedule, the agency aims to give students the full duration to focus solely on their answers.

More Space for Rough Work

In a move to ease the pressure during the exam, the NTA has also doubled the space available for rough work. In previous years, candidates received only two pages for calculations and notes. Now, they will be provided with four dedicated rough work pages.

This enhancement gives students ample room to perform complex calculations, draw diagrams for physics and chemistry problems, and organize their thoughts without worrying about running out of space. The additional pages are intended to reduce stress and allow candidates to work more neatly and efficiently.

Redesigned Question Booklet Layout

Recognizing the diverse needs of all candidates, the NTA has also revised the physical layout of the question booklet. Earlier, all rough work pages were located at the end of the booklet. This posed a challenge for many students, particularly those who are left-handed, as it could be awkward to reach the back pages while writing.

To address this feedback, the new format will place two rough work pages at the very beginning of the booklet, immediately following the instructions page. The remaining two pages will stay at the end. This balanced distribution ensures that all candidates, regardless of their writing hand, can access space conveniently. The NTA has confirmed that this new layout will be consistent across all question booklets, whether they are printed in English or any of the regional languages.

Commitment to Fairness and Security

While these changes focus on improving convenience and comfort for students, the NTA has firmly stated that the core principles of the examination remain unchanged. The agency emphasized that there will be no compromise on the high standards of fairness, security, and transparency that the NEET exam is known for. These procedural updates are purely aimed at making the environment more conducive for candidates to perform at their best.

Summary of Changes for NEET UG 2026

Here is a quick overview of the new arrangements for the upcoming exam:

  • Exam Date: 21 June 2026
  • Exam Timing: 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM
  • Total Duration: 195 minutes
  • Rough Work Pages: 4 pages total
  • Rough Work at the Start of Booklet: 2 pages
  • Rough Work at the End of Booklet: 2 pages

Guidance for Candidates

The NTA has advised all registered candidates to carefully review the instructions provided in their admit cards and the official information bulletin. It is crucial to be aware of all the rules and regulations before appearing for the exam. Additionally, students are encouraged to cooperate with the officials and staff present at the examination center to ensure that the entire process runs smoothly and without any disruptions. Staying informed and prepared will help candidates navigate the exam day with confidence and ease.
