Sarthak Siddhant, a student who gained prominence during the CBSE OSM controversy, along with cybersecurity researcher Nisarg Adhikari, challenged the IIT Director’s assertions with a clever demonstration. Rather than engaging in abstract arguments, Siddhant chose to prove his point through direct action on the platform itself.
In his response to Agrawal, Siddhant asserted that the Director’s understanding of Telegram’s editing mechanism was fundamentally flawed. To substantiate his position, he shared screenshots of actual Telegram conversations where he had sent an old message and subsequently edited it to read “meow meow.” The visual evidence clearly showed that whenever a message undergoes modification on Telegram, the platform automatically displays an “Edited” label beneath it in clear text. Furthermore, users can easily access the complete edit history of any message to see previous versions.
This demonstration effectively dismantled the argument that Telegram allows users to alter messages without leaving any trace. Siddhant explained that if a fraudster attempted to edit an old message to include leaked paper content after an exam, the “Edited” tag would immediately expose the manipulation. Users can easily configure these tools to maintain access to the platform, rendering the ban largely symbolic rather than effective. This design choice, he noted, means that determined users will always find a way to reach Telegram regardless of regulatory actions.
