Rajasthan Launches Mental Health Initiative Across 1,500 Government Primary Schools
In a significant step toward child welfare, the Rajasthan government has rolled out a dedicated mental health and emotional well-being programme across approximately 1,500 government primary schools in the state. Named ‘Khushishala’, the initiative is designed to support the psychological development of young students and foster a positive, nurturing learning environment.
According to state officials, Rajasthan is the first state in the country to introduce such a structured and large-scale mental health programme within the school system. The programme specifically targets students from Classes 1 to 5, aiming to build emotional resilience, reduce stress, and promote a constructive atmosphere in classrooms.
Focus on Emotional Strength and Life Skills
The core objective of the Khushishala programme is to help children manage their emotions effectively and develop essential life skills from an early age. Through activity-based learning methods, the curriculum integrates emotional well-being, social development, and practical coping strategies into everyday schooling.
Rather than relying solely on traditional academic instruction, the programme encourages interactive participation. Students are guided through exercises and group activities that enhance self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal communication. The approach is intended to create a supportive peer culture and reduce anxiety or behavioural issues among young learners.
Implementation by State Education Body
The Rajasthan State Educational Research and Training Council (RSCERT) is responsible for implementing the initiative across the selected schools. The council has developed age-appropriate modules and training resources for teachers, enabling them to identify early signs of emotional distress and respond with sensitivity.
Teachers are being oriented to act as facilitators rather than instructors, creating a classroom dynamic where children feel safe to express themselves. The programme also includes periodic assessments to monitor progress and adapt activities to the needs of different student groups.
By embedding mental health awareness into the foundational years of education, the state aims to equip children with the emotional tools they need to thrive both academically and personally. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that mental well-being is just as important as academic achievement in shaping a child’s future.
With this launch, Rajasthan sets a precedent for other states to follow, demonstrating how institutional commitment can bring mental health support directly to the classroom.
