Historic Second Term for Delhi University Vice-Chancellor
The Ministry of Education has officially extended Professor Yogesh Singh’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University (DU), marking a historic first for the institution. He becomes the first VC in DU’s history to secure a second consecutive term under the university’s revised statutes.
His new term commences on October 8, 2026, and will run for five years. This appointment follows amendments made to the university’s regulations by the central government roughly three years ago, which made such reappointments possible.
Transformative Leadership Since 2021
Professor Singh originally took charge as DU’s 23rd Vice-Chancellor on October 8, 2021. His first five-year tenure has been marked by several significant reforms and initiatives that have reshaped the university’s academic and administrative landscape.
Implementation of NEP 2020
Under his guidance, Delhi University fully adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The most notable change was replacing the decades-old three-year undergraduate structure with the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), bringing the university in line with modern educational standards.
Overhaul of Admission System
The traditional cut-off based admission process was phased out during his tenure. In its place, the university now relies on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), offering a more transparent and streamlined entry process for aspiring students across the country.
Digital Governance and Campus Development
His leadership period witnessed substantial progress in digital infrastructure. Examinations have been digitized, the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) has been introduced, and modernization projects worth over ₹2,000 crore have been accelerated across the campus.
Faculty Recruitment Drive
Addressing long-standing vacancies, the administration initiated large-scale recruitment of permanent faculty members, filling academic positions that had remained empty for years and strengthening the university’s teaching capabilities.
An Impressive Administrative Background
Professor Singh, a computer engineering academic, brings a wealth of administrative experience to the role. Before joining Delhi University, he served as the third Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University (DTU), held the position of Director at Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), and was Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Gujarat. He currently also holds the additional charge of Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
His reappointment signals continuity in the university’s leadership and its ongoing reform trajectory. The coming term is expected to build upon the foundational work laid during his first five years, with a focus on further academic innovation, infrastructure enhancement, and strengthening DU’s position as one of India’s premier higher education institutions.
