Determination Against All Odds: Injured Aspirant Appears for NEET Re-Examination

In an inspiring display of resilience, a young medical aspirant from Kolkata has captured national attention by appearing for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination despite suffering severe injuries in a road accident. The student, identified as Shrishti Dubey, was involved in a serious vehicular incident on June 14 that left her with multiple fractured ribs and lung damage, requiring major vascular surgery. Rather than allowing her physical condition to derail her dreams, she chose to sit for the high-stakes medical entrance test, supported by an array of special arrangements made specifically for her at the examination venue.

Special Provisions at the Test Centre

Shrishti’s journey to the examination hall was nothing short of extraordinary. Following the accident, she underwent a complex surgical procedure, and her recovery was still in its early stages when the re-test date arrived. It was only after the intervention of the Union Education Minister that the necessary approvals were granted for her to participate in the exam under carefully managed conditions. The examination centre was equipped with a dedicated private room for her, ensuring she had a quiet and comfortable environment to concentrate on her paper. A team of medical professionals was stationed on-site, and an ambulance remained on standby throughout the duration of the test to address any potential health emergencies.

Despite the physical pain and the recent trauma of her surgery, Shrishti demonstrated remarkable composure as she worked through the question paper. Her parents, visibly emotional, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the education ministry for their proactive support and for making the necessary accommodations that allowed their daughter to pursue her aspirations.

Massive Scale of the Re-Examination

The re-test, conducted nationwide, saw the participation of approximately 22.79 lakh candidates. This large-scale examination was organised with meticulous attention to security and fairness. Authorities implemented stringent identity checks, continuous surveillance, and robust security protocols at all centres to ensure the integrity and transparency of the process. The examination was scheduled to run from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, and candidates were observed complying with all procedural requirements as they entered their respective halls.

Extended Exam Duration Explained

One of the notable changes introduced this year is the extension of the total examination time. The NEET UG paper, which previously lasted 180 minutes, has now been expanded to 195 minutes. This adjustment was made to provide candidates with additional buffer time. The extra 15 minutes are intended to accommodate the time spent on attendance verification and other formalities, ensuring that these administrative tasks do not eat into the actual time available for answering questions. This change aims to give aspirants a fairer opportunity to complete the paper without feeling rushed.

Understanding the Examination Pattern

The NEET re-examination follows a well-established structure. The paper comprises a total of 180 questions, cumulatively worth 720 marks. The subject-wise distribution includes 45 questions each from Physics and Chemistry, with each subject carrying 180 marks. The Biology section is the most significant, featuring 90 questions that account for 360 marks. In terms of the marking scheme, each correct answer awards the candidate 4 marks, while an incorrect response results in a deduction of 1 mark. Unanswered questions do not attract any penalty, meaning there is no negative marking for leaving a question blank.

The story of Shrishti Dubey serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity to persevere. Her decision to appear for the exam under such challenging circumstances has resonated with students and educators alike, offering a message of hope and determination to thousands of young people across the country who are navigating their own academic journeys. The successful execution of her special arrangements also highlights the importance of inclusive practices within the education system, ensuring that no candidate is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control.
