The Sacred Month of Purushottam: A Time for Devotion and Reflection

The Hindu lunar calendar brings a rare and spiritually potent period known as Adhik Maas, or the extra month. Starting today, this holy month is dedicated entirely to Lord Vishnu, earning it the revered name Purushottam Maas. In Hindu tradition, this is not just another month; it is a divine window for intense prayer, charity, and self-discipline. Believers hold that any virtuous act performed during this time yields manifold spiritual rewards. However, it comes with a strict set of guidelines—certain worldly celebrations are forbidden, while others are strongly encouraged. Understanding these rules is key to making the most of this sacred period.

Why Does Adhik Maas Occur Once Every Three Years?

The occurrence of Adhik Maas is a fascinating astronomical adjustment. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar, meaning it tracks both the sun and the moon. A solar year lasts about 365 days, while a lunar year is roughly 354 days. This creates a gap of approximately 11 days each year. Over three years, this difference accumulates to about a full month. To keep the calendar aligned with the seasons and the natural cycle, this extra month is inserted. In earlier times, it was known as Mal Maas, considered an inauspicious period because the sun does not transit into a new zodiac sign during this time. Legend holds that Lord Vishnu, seeing this, declared the month his own, transforming it into a highly auspicious time for worship. Since then, it has been celebrated as Purushottam Maas, a period dedicated to spiritual growth, penance, and charity.

What to Avoid During Adhik Maas

This month is primarily about inner purification and restraint. It is a time to step back from worldly distractions and focus on the divine. As such, many actions that are normally considered joyful or necessary are put on hold.

Postpone All Auspicious Ceremonies

The most important rule is to avoid all major life events and celebrations. This includes:

  • Weddings and engagements: No marriage ceremonies or tilak (engagement) rituals are performed.
  • Housewarming ceremonies: Moving into a new home (griha pravesh) is not considered favorable.
  • Sacraments for children: Rituals like the first haircut (mundan) or the sacred thread ceremony (janeu) are postponed.

The belief is that such shubh (auspicious) works do not yield their intended benefits during this month. Similarly, starting a new business, purchasing a new vehicle, or buying property is also discouraged.

Adopt a Sattvic Diet and Lifestyle

Dietary discipline is a cornerstone of observing Adhik Maas. The focus is on consuming pure, light, and sattvic food. This means:

  • Avoid tamasic foods: Garlic, onions, meat, fish, and eggs are strictly avoided.
  • No intoxicants: Alcohol and any other mind-altering substances are forbidden.
  • Eat simple, pure meals: A diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products is recommended.

This period is considered a time to cleanse both the body and the mind. Indulging in heavy or impure foods is thought to hinder spiritual progress.

Guard Your Speech and Behavior

Beyond physical actions, inner discipline is equally important. The scriptures advise avoiding negative emotions and behaviors. This includes:

  • Avoiding anger and harsh words: Keeping a calm and peaceful demeanor is essential.
  • No lying or gossip: Truthfulness and wholesome speech are encouraged.
  • Steering clear of conflict: Arguments and disrespecting others are considered particularly harmful during this month.

By cultivating positive thoughts and a quiet mind, one can harness the unique spiritual energy of this time.

What to Do During Adhik Maas

While many activities are restricted, the month is filled with opportunities for profound spiritual practice. The focus shifts from external celebrations to internal devotion.

Daily Worship and Mantra Chanting

The core of Adhik Maas is the worship of Lord Vishnu. Daily rituals are believed to bring immense blessings.

  • Light a lamp: Lighting a diya (lamp) in the evening at the main door, near the Tulsi plant, and in the home temple is considered highly auspicious. This is believed to invite positive energy and prosperity.
  • Chant the Vishnu mantra: Reciting the powerful mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” daily brings mental peace and spiritual merit.
  • Read sacred texts: Reading the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Lord Vishnu), the Bhagavad Gita, or other religious scriptures is extremely rewarding.

The Power of Charity (Daan)

Giving to those in need is a central practice during this month. Charity performed now is said to multiply in its spiritual and karmic benefits.

  • Donate food and clothing: Offering food grains, clothes, and other essential items to the needy is highly recommended.
  • Traditional offerings: An ancient tradition involves donating malpuas (a sweet pancake) placed in a bronze vessel. This act is considered exceptionally meritorious.

Embrace a Disciplined Daily Routine

Living a life of self-control and simplicity is the ultimate goal. A recommended daily routine includes:

  • Early rising and bathing: Waking up before sunrise and taking a bath to purify the body.
  • Meditation and prayer: Spending time in quiet contemplation and prayer.
  • Observing celibacy: Practicing brahmacharya (celibacy) is encouraged to conserve spiritual energy.

This disciplined lifestyle is believed to strengthen the mind and spirit, allowing one to connect more deeply with the divine. The good deeds performed during this sacred month are said to bring rewards that are magnified many times over, making it a truly unique and powerful period for spiritual growth.
