Can a Mobile App Really Shut Down an ATM? Experts Weigh In on the Viral Video

After reports emerged of e-rickshaws being remotely controlled through apps like BAT-BMS, the Indian government moved swiftly to ban such software. Now, a fresh viral video is sparking fresh alarm. It claims that a mobile application can also turn ATMs on and off at will.

This raises a troubling question: Are bank ATMs so vulnerable that anyone with a smartphone app could hack or control them? Cyber security experts have weighed in on the matter, and their conclusions are reassuring.

The Viral Video That Started It All

The clip in question shows two individuals using a mobile app in front of an ATM. The video suggests that the same application first shuts down the machine and then restarts it. The faces of the people involved are not visible, making identification impossible. However, the app interface looks strikingly similar to the BAT-BMS application previously used to remotely disable e-rickshaws.

Why BAT-BMS Was Already in the Spotlight

Just last week, several incidents came to light where Chinese apps such as BAT-BMS and Lossigy were used to remotely switch off e-rickshaws. Following an investigation, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) directed Google Play Store and Apple App Store to remove those applications. As a result, BAT-BMS and several others were taken down from the stores.

Can an ATM Really Be Controlled This Way?

This is the question on many people’s minds after watching the viral video. Experts, however, are clear: ATMs are not as easy to compromise as e-rickshaws.

ATMs are connected to a bank’s secure network through encrypted VPN connections and multiple layers of firewalls. Their systems incorporate several levels of security, making it highly unlikely that a common mobile app or Bluetooth connection could control them.

So How Was the Video Made?

Cyber security professionals point to several possible explanations for what the video appears to show:

  • The ATM may have already been in the process of rebooting.
  • The people recording could have timed the footage to create a false impression.
  • The video might have been edited or altered to mislead viewers.
  • The entire clip could be a stunt designed to gain views and go viral on social media.

No credible evidence has emerged so far to prove that a standard mobile app can remotely power an ATM on or off.

Why ATMs Are Built Differently

ATMs are an integral part of the banking network. They rely on a host of security technologies, including secure VPN connections, multi-layered security firewalls, restricted access systems, and direct connectivity to authorized bank servers. This layered protection makes them extremely difficult to manipulate through any ordinary mobile application.

Government Action Has Already Begun

Following the e-rickshaw incidents, the government did not wait for further trouble. Acting on MeitY directives, both Google Play Store and Apple App Store removed BAT-BMS and similar apps to prevent misuse. This proactive step has set a precedent for dealing with such threats quickly.

While the viral video may cause temporary concern, the consensus among experts is clear: the security architecture of ATMs is fundamentally different from that of e-rickshaws, and the public has little reason to worry about a simple app gaining control over their bank’s cash machines.
