The AI Coding Boom: Who Really Benefits?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way software is written. By the end of 2024, nearly 29% of all new code in the United States was generated with the help of AI tools. In India, that figure has climbed to around 20%, signaling a significant shift in how developers approach their work. However, a recent study reveals a nuanced reality: the productivity gains from AI-assisted coding are not evenly distributed. Experienced programmers are reaping the most benefits, while beginners and less seasoned coders see only marginal improvements.

Global Adoption of AI-Powered Coding

Research conducted by the Complexity Science Hub in Austria and Utrecht University in the Netherlands analyzed data from GitHub, the world’s largest coding platform. The findings paint a clear picture of AI’s growing influence. In the United States, the share of AI-generated code jumped from just 5% in 2022 to nearly 29% by late 2024. France follows closely at 24%, with Germany at 23%. India has made swift progress, now at approximately 20%, placing it near the top of the global adoption curve. Russia and China trail behind at 15% and 12%, respectively.

The Productivity Paradox: Experience Matters

One of the most striking findings is the difference in how various skill levels use AI. Less experienced programmers rely on AI for roughly 37% of their code, while seasoned developers use it for about 27%. Intuitively, one might expect the less experienced group to gain more from the assistance. Yet the data shows the opposite: only experienced programmers demonstrated a notable boost in productivity—both in speed and code quality.

Researcher Simone Deniotti explains that novice coders derive very limited benefit from AI. Instead of closing the gap between skill levels, AI may actually widen it. Johannes Wachs, another expert involved in the study, notes that experienced developers do not simply use AI to complete routine tasks faster. They also leverage it to explore new libraries, experiment with unfamiliar tools, and accelerate their learning process—further enhancing their capabilities.

How the Study Was Conducted

The research team analyzed contributions from approximately 160,000 developers, examining over 30 million Python code submissions on GitHub. They employed a specialized AI model to detect which code was likely generated with the assistance of tools like ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot. Since GitHub records every change—additions, deletions, and modifications—the researchers gained a clear view of how AI adoption has accelerated globally across different regions and experience levels.

Implications for the Future of Coding

These findings raise important questions about the direction of the AI coding boom. While the technology is undoubtedly powerful, its benefits are not automatic. For beginners, relying heavily on AI-generated code may hinder the development of foundational skills and problem-solving abilities. Without a deep understanding of what the code does, novices risk becoming overly dependent on tools that may produce flawed or inefficient solutions.

  • For experienced developers: AI acts as a force multiplier, enabling faster experimentation and deeper exploration of complex systems.
  • For beginners: AI can serve as a helpful assistant, but it cannot replace the learning that comes from writing code manually, debugging errors, and understanding underlying logic.
  • For the industry: Training programs and educational curricula may need to adapt, emphasizing when and how to use AI responsibly rather than relying on it as a crutch.

India’s Position in the Global Landscape

India’s rapid adoption of AI in coding—now at 20%—places it ahead of several Western nations and far beyond countries like Russia and China. This trend reflects the country’s strong tech ecosystem and willingness to embrace new tools. However, the study’s insights suggest that simply increasing AI usage may not automatically lead to higher productivity across the board. The quality of outcomes depends heavily on the skill and experience of the developer wielding the tool.

As AI continues to reshape the coding landscape, the challenge will be to ensure that the technology serves as a bridge rather than a barrier. For India and the rest of the world, the goal should not just be to write more code with AI, but to write better code—and to ensure that the benefits of this powerful technology reach every level of the developer community.
