The AI Resume Flood: Why Most Recruiters Can’t Find the Right Talent

India’s job market is facing an unexpected challenge. According to a recent report from LinkedIn, the surge of AI-generated resumes is making it harder than ever for recruiters to identify qualified candidates. Despite a spike in hiring activity, the quality of applications has become a major concern.

The research reveals that 74 percent of recruiters in India are struggling to find suitable talent in 2026. This is happening at a time when hiring volumes have jumped by nearly 40 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. More jobs are available, but the right people seem harder to pin down.

The Problem with Polished but Misleading Resumes

Recruiters are receiving more applications than ever before, but a significant portion of them are not useful. Over half of hiring professionals say the rise of AI-generated applications has worsened the situation. These resumes look professional and well-structured on the surface, but they often fail to reflect a candidate’s actual skills or experience.

The issue is not just about volume. Nearly half of recruiters report spending excessive time filtering out fake or low-quality applications. This slows down the entire hiring process and makes it difficult to make quick decisions. Since 2022, the number of applicants per job posting has more than doubled, adding to the pressure.

Why Candidates Feel Unprepared

While 72 percent of professionals are actively looking for a new job, 85 percent admit they do not feel fully ready for the hiring process. This gap between ambition and preparation may be one reason why many turn to AI tools to polish their resumes. However, the result is a flood of applications that look good on paper but lack substance.

Recruiters Turn to AI for Help

Ironically, the same technology causing the problem is also being used to solve it. Recruiters are increasingly adopting AI tools to improve their hiring outcomes. In India, 71 percent of recruiters using AI say it has helped them discover skilled candidates they might have otherwise overlooked. Meanwhile, 80 percent believe AI makes it easier to assess a candidate’s true potential and speeds up the hiring process.

These tools are not just a temporary fix. Around 80 percent of recruiters plan to expand their use of AI this year for tasks such as screening, candidate review, and talent search. LinkedIn itself is introducing new AI-powered features in India, including salary and notice period filters, faster shortlisting tools, and tailored solutions for small businesses.

Shifting Focus from Degrees to Skills

The hiring landscape is evolving. According to Ruchi Anand, Vice President of LinkedIn Talent Solutions for Asia Pacific, recruitment is moving away from a focus on degrees or company names. Instead, it is centering on real skills and abilities. She notes that achieving this shift at scale is nearly impossible without AI, and when used responsibly, the technology can make hiring more fair and effective.

Key Takeaways from the Report

  • 74% of recruiters in India struggle to find qualified candidates despite higher hiring activity.
  • AI-generated applications have increased significantly, often masking a candidate’s real abilities.
  • Half of recruiters waste time filtering out low-quality or fake applications.
  • 72% of professionals are job hunting, but 85% feel unprepared for the process.
  • 71% of recruiters using AI have found talent they would have missed otherwise.
  • 80% of recruiters plan to increase their use of AI in hiring this year.

The data paints a clear picture: the hiring process is under strain from both sides. Candidates are leaning on AI to create resumes that may not reflect their true capabilities, while recruiters are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of applications. As both groups turn to AI for solutions, the challenge will be to ensure the technology is used in ways that reveal genuine talent rather than hiding it.
