India Poised to Lead a Scientific Revolution Through AI, Says DeepMind CEO
At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis outlined a compelling vision for India’s future in artificial intelligence. Speaking on February 18, Hassabis argued that the nation has the potential to become a global leader in AI-driven scientific breakthroughs. He praised the energy and enthusiasm visible across Indian universities and the broader innovation ecosystem, calling it a clear signal of the country’s readiness to take on a leadership role.
Leveraging AI as a Force Multiplier in Key Sectors
Hassabis encouraged India to double down on sectors where it already holds a competitive edge. He described AI as a “force multiplier” that could amplify existing strengths, allowing the country to extend its lead rather than starting from scratch. By integrating AI into established domains, India could accelerate progress and unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation.
He highlighted agriculture as one such area, noting that AI can improve crop resilience and help farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions. In the creative industries, Hassabis pointed to Bollywood and other entertainment sectors as fertile ground for AI tools. These technologies, he explained, can enable new forms of storytelling and streamline film production processes, making them more efficient and imaginative.
Open Collaboration with the Government
The DeepMind CEO expressed a strong willingness to partner with the Indian government. He stated that if the government seeks collaboration, there are numerous fields where the company can contribute technical expertise and research support. This openness suggests a potential for deep, strategic cooperation between public institutions and private AI leaders, particularly in areas that align with national priorities.
What Hassabis Said About AGI
When asked about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Hassabis offered a measured perspective. He emphasized that advanced AI systems could eventually play a crucial role in accelerating scientific discovery and tackling global challenges such as disease, climate change, and inequality. However, he was careful to note that current AI technologies have not yet reached the level required to be considered true AGI.
Hassabis predicted that early forms of AGI could emerge within the next five to seven years. A fully developed version, he added, might take one or two decades to materialize. This timeline, he suggested, reflects both the complexity of the challenge and the rapid pace of progress in the field.
Addressing the Risks of AI
Hassabis did not shy away from discussing the potential downsides of AI. He raised concerns about the impact on employment and stressed the need for robust safety measures. As AI systems become more powerful, he argued, it is essential to establish strong guardrails to ensure they ultimately serve humanity’s best interests. Responsible development, he concluded, must go hand in hand with technological ambition.
