Higher Education Enrollment Crosses 4.5 Crore Mark
The Ministry of Education has released the latest figures from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) covering the academic years 2022-23 and 2023-24. The data reveals significant growth in student enrollment across the country, with total numbers now reaching 4.5 crore. This marks a substantial increase from previous years and reflects the expanding reach of higher education institutions throughout India.
The survey highlights remarkable progress in female participation, with women now outnumbering men in higher education. Women Leading the Way in Higher Education

The data shows female enrollment has risen from 1.58 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore in 2023-24. This consistent upward trend indicates that more women are pursuing higher education than ever before, breaking traditional barriers and contributing to a more educated and empowered society.
Rising Participation of Socially Backward Classes
The survey reveals substantial improvements in enrollment among students from historically marginalized communities. These gains reflect successful efforts to make higher education more inclusive and accessible to all sections of society.
Students from Scheduled Castes have seen enrollment rise to 69.72 lakh, marking a 51.4 percent increase over the decade. Scheduled Tribe students have shown even more dramatic growth, with enrollment reaching 28.83 lakh, a substantial 75.7 percent increase from 2014-15 levels.
Other Backward Classes have also demonstrated significant progress, with enrollment reaching 1.80 crore, representing a 60.2 percent increase over the same period. These figures indicate that efforts to democratize higher education are yielding tangible results.
Improved Gross Enrollment Ratio
The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER), which measures participation in higher education among youth aged 18 to 23 years, has shown consistent improvement. The overall GER has increased from 23.7 in 2014-15 to 30.0 in 2023-24, representing a substantial gain in educational access.
Notably, the female GER has surpassed the overall average, reaching 31.2 in 2023-24, up from 22.9 in 2014-15. This achievement underscores the significant strides made in women’s education and their growing presence in higher education institutions.
Gender Parity Achieved and Surpassed
The Gender Parity Index (GPI) for 2023-24 stands at 1.08, indicating that women now outnumber men in higher education enrollment. This positive trend has been maintained for seven consecutive years, with the index consistently remaining above 1.0.

Growth in STEM Education

Expansion in Teaching Workforce
The survey also documents growth in the number of teachers and faculty members across higher education institutions. The total teaching workforce reached 17.32 lakh in 2023-24, reflecting the sector’s expansion and the need for qualified educators.
Women’s representation in the teaching profession has shown notable improvement, increasing from 5.69 lakh in 2014-15 to 7.78 lakh in 2023-24. This growth in female faculty members contributes to more diverse academic environments and provides role models for women students.
