Amarnath Yatra 2026: Key Dates and Registration Details

Each year, millions of devotees eagerly await the opportunity to undertake one of India’s most sacred pilgrimages—the Amarnath Yatra. Pilgrims from across the country and abroad travel to Jammu and Kashmir to witness the naturally formed ice Shiva lingam at the holy cave shrine. If you are planning to visit Baba Barfani in 2026, it is essential to understand the registration process, health requirements, travel permits, and other important guidelines well in advance. Proper preparation ensures a safe and smooth journey.

This year, a significant number of devotees have already completed their registration. Below is a comprehensive guide covering the start and end dates of the 2026 yatra, eligibility criteria, step-by-step registration procedures, and the primary routes to reach the shrine.

When Does the Amarnath Yatra 2026 Begin?

According to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), the Amarnath Yatra 2026 will commence on July 3, 2026, and conclude on August 28, 2026. The pilgrimage will span a total of 57 days. As of now, more than 3.75 lakh devotees have already registered for the yatra.

How to Register for the Amarnath Yatra 2026

Registration can be completed through both online and offline channels. It is mandatory for all pilgrims to obtain a valid Yatra Permit and an RFID card before starting the journey.

Online Registration Process

  • Visit the official website or mobile app of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Offline registration can be done at authorized branches of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB), State Bank of India (SBI), and YES Bank. Registration is processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Pilgrims must carry original identification documents and a valid Health Certificate to the bank branch.

Who Is Eligible for the Amarnath Yatra 2026?

  • Individuals aged between 13 and 70 years who are in good physical health can undertake the yatra.
  • A Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) is mandatory for all pilgrims.
  • Pregnant women beyond six weeks of gestation are not permitted to join the yatra.
  • Those with serious heart, lung, or other chronic conditions should consult a doctor before registering.
  • No pilgrim will be allowed to proceed without a valid Yatra Permit and an RFID card.

How to Reach the Amarnath Cave Shrine

Devotees must first travel to either Jammu or Srinagar before proceeding to the base camps. Here are the main travel options:

  • By Air: Regular flights connect major Indian cities to Jammu and Srinagar airports.
  • By Train: Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the nearest major railhead for the yatra.
  • By Road: Buses and taxis are readily available from Jammu and Srinagar to the base camps.

From the base camps, pilgrims can choose between two primary routes:

  • Pahalgam Route: This is the traditional and longer path, involving a trek of approximately 36 to 48 kilometers. It is relatively less steep and allows for a more gradual ascent.
  • Baltal Route: This is a shorter but more challenging route, covering about 14 kilometers. It is steeper and requires greater physical endurance.

Both routes offer breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape and culminate at the holy cave where the ice Shiva lingam is worshipped. Pilgrims are advised to acclimatize properly, carry adequate warm clothing, and stay hydrated throughout the journey.
