Apple Hits 2.5 Billion Active Devices Worldwide, India Emerges as Key Growth Market
Apple has reached a historic milestone, now counting over 2.5 billion active devices across the globe. CEO Tim Cook highlighted this achievement during the company’s recent earnings call, emphasizing the significant role India played in driving this success. The tech giant recorded its strongest-ever December quarter performance in the country, marking a pivotal moment in its expansion strategy.
Active Device Ecosystem Crosses New Threshold
Tim Cook confirmed that Apple’s active device install base—spanning iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and other products—has grown to 2.5 billion units. This represents a steady climb from 2.35 billion in January 2025 and 2.2 billion in 2024. Over the past two years, approximately 150 million new devices have joined the active user base, reflecting sustained global demand for Apple’s ecosystem.
iPhone Leads the Charge with Record Revenue
Apple’s iPhone segment delivered exceptional results in the first fiscal quarter of 2026. Revenue from iPhone sales surged 23% year-over-year to $85.27 billion. The company attributed this impressive growth to the iPhone 17 series, launched in September, which saw what Cook described as “astonishing” consumer demand. The flagship product remains the cornerstone of Apple’s financial success, contributing the largest share of total revenue.
Total Revenue Hits All-Time High
For the quarter ending December 2025, Apple posted a record total revenue of $143.8 billion. The iPhone accounted for the bulk of this figure at $85.3 billion, marking a 23% increase compared to the same period last year. This strong start to fiscal 2026 underscores Apple’s ability to generate growth even in a competitive tech landscape.
Mixed Performance Across Other Product Lines
While iPhone soared, other categories showed varied results:
- Mac: Revenue fell short of expectations, declining 7% year-over-year to $8.39 billion.
- iPad: Performed well, with revenue rising 6% to $8.60 billion. Notably, nearly half of iPad buyers were new to the device.
- Wearables, Home, and Accessories: This segment faced a setback, generating $11.49 billion—a 2% annual drop and below analyst projections.
Services Business Continues Strong Growth
Apple’s Services division delivered robust performance, posting $30.01 billion in revenue—a 14% increase year-over-year. This category includes income from Apple TV+, iCloud, AppleCare, and advertising. Cook noted that Apple TV+ viewership climbed 36% in December, signaling growing engagement with the company’s subscription offerings.
India Takes Center Stage in Growth Story
India emerged as a standout market during the earnings discussion. Tim Cook specifically highlighted the country, stating that Apple recorded its best-ever December quarter there. Revenue growth in India reached double digits, driven by rising consumer adoption and expanding retail presence. CFO Kevan Parekh confirmed that the user base in India is expanding rapidly, fueled by new retail stores and increasing demand. This momentum positions India as one of Apple’s most critical markets for future expansion.
