The company responsible for crafting the majority of iPhone displays is none other than Samsung, Apple’s fiercest competitor in the smartphone market. It may sound ironic, but this relationship has been a cornerstone of Apple’s supply chain for years. Of course, Apple also sources displays from other manufacturers like LG and BOE to diversify its supply chain and reduce costs. However, Samsung remains the dominant supplier, especially for the most advanced panels used in Pro models.

Apple first turned to Samsung for OLED displays with the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. At the time, Apple emphasized that these panels were custom-engineered to meet its exacting standards, offering superior contrast, accurate color reproduction, and wide color support. This marked a turning point for iPhone displays, setting a new benchmark for the entire industry.

By 2020, with the iPhone 12 series, Apple had transitioned all its models to OLED technology. By then, LG and BOE had also begun producing OLED panels that met Apple’s requirements, helping the company strengthen its supply chain and manage component costs. With the iPhone 13 series, Apple introduced LTPO OLED technology for the first time. This innovation allowed the display to support a 120Hz refresh rate, making scrolling and animations noticeably smoother while intelligently adjusting the refresh rate to save power. The iPhone 14 Pro models later added the Always-On Display feature, which relied on LTPO’s ability to drop to a very low refresh rate without draining the battery.

Now, industry leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro, expected to launch in September, will feature Samsung’s latest LTPO+ display panels. This upgraded technology promises to take the user experience even further.

Another key advantage is the ability to integrate an infrared camera seamlessly beneath the display.
