Assam Unveils Babu Asoni Scheme: Monthly Stipend for Male Students Beginning February 2026

The Assam government has officially announced the launch of the Babu Asoni Scheme, a new financial assistance program designed to support male students pursuing higher education. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the initiative will take effect from February 1, with funds being transferred directly to eligible students’ bank accounts on a monthly basis.

Financial Support Structure

Under this scheme, male students enrolled in undergraduate programs will receive a monthly stipend of ₹1,000, while those pursuing postgraduate degrees will be eligible for ₹2,000 per month. The differential structure aims to address the increasing financial demands of advanced studies.

Eligibility Criteria

The scheme targets students from economically weaker backgrounds. To qualify for benefits, applicants must come from families with an annual income not exceeding ₹4 lakh. However, the scheme explicitly excludes students whose parents are government employees or whose family income surpasses the specified threshold.

Fulfilling a Long-Standing Commitment

In an announcement shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister noted that this scheme honors a promise made to male students across the state. By easing financial burdens, the government aims to enable students to devote their full attention to academic pursuits without the constant worry of monetary constraints.

Addressing Unemployment Through Education

The timing of this initiative is particularly significant given recent statistics. Data presented in the Lok Sabha for 2023-24 revealed that Assam’s unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 29 stands at 14.1 percent. State authorities believe that strategic investment in education and skill enhancement will create stronger pathways to employment opportunities for the state’s young population.

Expanding Existing Educational Support Programs

The Babu Asoni Scheme represents a natural extension of the state government’s ongoing efforts to make higher education accessible. Previously, initiatives such as the Nijut Moina scheme have provided financial support exclusively to female students from higher secondary through postgraduate levels. This program has reportedly contributed to increased enrollment rates and a notable decline in child marriage cases across the state.

With the introduction of Babu Asoni, the government is now addressing the needs of male students, creating a more balanced approach to educational support. Officials anticipate that this expansion will help reduce dropout rates in higher education institutions and better prepare students for competitive job markets.

The scheme’s direct benefit transfer mechanism ensures transparency and eliminates intermediaries, allowing students to receive their stipends without unnecessary delays. This streamlined approach reflects the government’s commitment to efficient implementation of welfare programs.

Educational experts view this development as a positive step toward creating a more equitable higher education landscape in Assam. By providing consistent financial support, the scheme aims to remove barriers that often force talented students to abandon their academic aspirations due to financial constraints.

The announcement has generated considerable interest among student communities and educational institutions throughout the state, with many viewing it as a catalyst for improved academic performance and higher completion rates in degree programs.
