The Auspicious Convergence of Adhik Maas and Guru Pradosh Vrat

In Hindu tradition, the Pradosh Vrat holds profound spiritual importance. Observed with devotion and strict adherence to ritualistic practices, this fast is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is widely believed that worshipping Lord Shiva on this sacred day helps devotees overcome sorrow, poverty, and obstacles in life. When this vrat falls on a Thursday, it becomes especially rewarding and is known as Guru Pradosh Vrat. This particular occurrence is considered highly beneficial as it combines the energies of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In 2026, this special vrat will be observed during the extra month of Adhik Maas, further amplifying its spiritual merit. Let us explore the date, significance, and auspicious timings for this unique observance.

Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026: Date and Timing

According to the Hindu calendar, the Trayodashi tithi (thirteenth lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Jyeshtha begins on May 28, 2026, at 7:57 AM. This tithi concludes on May 29, 2026, at 9:51 AM. Therefore, the Adhik Maas Guru Pradosh Vrat will be observed on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Auspicious Muhurat for Worship

Hindu scriptures prescribe that the worship of Lord Shiva during Pradosh Vrat should be performed during the Pradosh Kaal, which is the period immediately after sunset. On May 28, 2026, the Pradosh Kaal will commence at 7:12 PM and last until 9:15 PM. This window of approximately two hours is considered the most favorable time for performing the rituals and prayers associated with this vrat.

Religious Significance of Guru Pradosh Vrat

The Guru Pradosh Vrat is revered for its ability to bring about positive changes in various aspects of life. Devotees observe this fast with the hope of receiving blessings for:

  • Offspring and family well-being: It is believed to bless couples with children and ensure harmony in family life.
  • Marriage and relationships: Those seeking a suitable life partner or wishing to strengthen their marital bond often observe this vrat.
  • Career and financial growth: The vrat is considered highly auspicious for professional advancement and economic stability.

The practice of worshipping Lord Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal stems from the belief that during this time, the deity resides on Mount Kailash in his most benevolent and joyful state. Prayers offered at this hour are said to be answered swiftly. Furthermore, observing the Pradosh Vrat during Adhik Maas is thought to alleviate planetary afflictions (grah dosh) and grant mental peace.

Worship Rituals for Adhik Maas Pradosh Vrat

The Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and performing his worship with sincerity is believed to fulfill all heartfelt desires. The prescribed rituals include:

  • Morning preparations: Devotees should take a bath early in the morning and visit a nearby Shiva temple. They should perform Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Shiva Linga with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar (Panchamrit).
  • Evening worship: The main puja is conducted during the Pradosh Kaal. Offer incense, light a lamp (diya), and present bhog (sacred food) to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Chanting Shiva mantras continuously during this period is highly recommended.
  • Aarti and offerings: Conclude the puja by performing the aarti of Lord Shiva. The Pradosh Kaal for worship is generally considered to be 45 minutes before sunset and 45 minutes after sunset.
