Essential Safety Guidelines for Induction Cooktop Users

With the relentless rise in LPG cylinder prices, many households are turning to induction cooktops as a modern, cost-effective alternative for daily cooking. While this technology offers speed and convenience, it is crucial to remember that it is an electronic appliance that demands careful handling. To prevent damage to your device or, more importantly, to avoid accidents, here are key precautions every user should follow.

Always Use Compatible Cookware

Not every pot or pan works on an induction stove. This appliance relies on a magnetic field to generate heat, meaning aluminum, copper, or glass vessels are completely unsuitable. For efficient and safe operation, always choose flat-bottomed cookware made from stainless steel or iron that explicitly carries an “induction base” label. Using the wrong type of utensil can lead to poor performance or even damage the unit.

Keep Water and Wet Hands Away

Although it sits on your kitchen counter, an induction cooktop is a powerful electrical device. Touching its control panel or plugging it in with wet hands significantly increases the risk of electric shock. Before operating the stove, make sure your hands are completely dry. This simple habit can prevent a serious hazard.

Ensure a Robust Power Connection

Induction cooktops typically consume between 1500W and 2000W of power, drawing a high electrical load. Never connect your appliance to a lightweight or loose extension board, as this can cause short circuits, sparking, or even a fire. Instead, always plug it directly into a dedicated, heavy-duty 15- or 16-amp power socket with proper wiring. This ensures a stable and safe electricity supply.

Keep Children at a Safe Distance

During cooking, the glass surface of an induction cooktop becomes extremely hot due to the heat transferred from the cookware. Young children, who may not understand the danger, could easily touch the hot surface out of curiosity. To prevent burns, always unplug the unit after use and store it in a location that is out of children’s reach. Supervision is essential whenever the appliance is in operation.

Avoid Overloading the Surface

While induction cooktops are durable, placing excessive weight on the glass surface can cause cracks or breakage. Do not place heavy pots, large appliances, or other items on the cooktop when it is not in use. Additionally, avoid dropping heavy utensils onto the surface, as the impact can compromise the glass integrity.

Clean with Care

Spilled food and liquids can quickly burn onto the glass surface, but cleaning requires caution. Never pour water directly onto a hot cooktop, as the sudden temperature change can shatter the glass. Instead, wait for the surface to cool completely, then use a soft, damp cloth and a gentle cleaner specifically designed for ceramic or glass cooktops. Abrasive pads or harsh chemicals can scratch and permanently damage the surface.

Do Not Leave the Cooktop Unattended

Although induction cooktops often have safety features like auto-shutoff, it is never wise to leave them completely unattended while cooking. Oil can overheat quickly, or a pot may boil dry, leading to smoke or fire. Stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on your food, especially when using high heat settings.

Regularly Inspect the Power Cord

The power cord is a vital component. Over time, it can become frayed, pinched, or damaged, especially if the cooktop is moved frequently. Before each use, check the cord for any signs of wear. If you notice any damage, replace the cord or have the appliance serviced by a qualified technician immediately to avoid electrical risks.
