Bihar’s Landmark Projects Win Prestigious National Honour
Bihar’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development and heritage preservation has earned well-deserved recognition on the national stage. Two major projects executed by the state’s Building Construction Department — the Bapu Tower in Patna and the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Smriti Stupa in Vaishali — have been honoured with the 17th CIDC Vishwakarma Award 2026. The accolades were presented during a grand ceremony in New Delhi, where Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, handed over the awards to Kumar Ravi, Secretary of the Building Construction Department. Both projects were recognised under the category of best construction projects.
A Moment of Pride for Bihar
Speaking on the occasion, Kumar Ravi described the recognition as a proud moment for the state. He credited the achievement to the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the unwavering dedication of the entire departmental team. Both projects were conceptualised under the Chief Minister’s guidance and implemented by the Building Construction Department with precision and care. Ravi extended his congratulations to all the engineers, architects, and agencies involved in bringing these ambitious projects to life.
He further emphasised that the department has consistently set new benchmarks in architecture and construction, helping shape a fresh identity for Bihar both in India and abroad. This is not the first time the department has received such acclaim — earlier, the Samrat Ashok Convention Centre in Patna and the Anjuman Islamia Hall were also honoured with the Vishwakarma Award.
Bapu Tower: A Living Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
Located in Gardanibagh, Patna, the Bapu Tower stands as a modern-day tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The museum brings Gandhi’s legacy to life through a rich blend of audio-visual installations, murals, sculptures, and short films. Visitors can explore the Mahatma’s journey, his principles, and his deep connection with Bihar — all presented through contemporary technology that makes the experience immersive and engaging.
Beyond being a tourist attraction, the Bapu Tower has evolved into an educational hub for students and young visitors. It offers a meaningful space to understand the values and history associated with one of India’s most influential leaders. Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Smriti Stupa: A Spiritual Landmark
In Vaishali, the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Smriti Stupa represents another remarkable achievement for the department. Spread across a sprawling 72-acre site, the complex was built to preserve the sacred relics of Lord Buddha and provide a serene space for Buddhist pilgrims and devotees. The stupa has quickly become a significant centre for those seeking to connect with the region’s ancient Buddhist heritage.
Constructed using sandstone sourced from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan, the stupa was designed with earthquake-resistant features, incorporating several modern techniques to ensure its structural integrity for centuries to come. The complex also includes a museum block, library, visitor centre, amphitheatre, and other contemporary amenities, making it a well-rounded destination for both spiritual and educational purposes.
Inaugurated in July 2025, the project is already contributing to the growth of tourism and the promotion of Buddhist culture in the region. It serves as a bridge between the past and the present, offering pilgrims and travellers alike a deeper understanding of the values and traditions that shaped this historic land.
