Bengaluru Dental College Suspends Six Faculty Members After Student’s Death

In the wake of a tragic incident, The Oxford Dental College in Bengaluru has taken decisive action by suspending six faculty members following the suicide of a 23-year-old student. The college administration confirmed that the suspensions will remain in effect until the completion of a thorough internal investigation into the matter.

An official statement released on January 12 outlined that the inquiry is currently underway, and no further details regarding the timeline of the probe have been disclosed. The move comes as part of the institution’s response to the untimely demise of the student, which has sent shockwaves through the campus community.

Faculty Members Named in Suspension Order

The suspended staff members, all affiliated with the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, include senior lecturers Anmol Rajdan, Shabana Banu, Faika Kolkar, and Alba Dinesh, along with Reader Sindhu R and Professor Sushmini Hegde. The college’s official communication confirmed their interim removal from duties as the investigation progresses.

Incident Details Emerge

The tragedy unfolded on Friday when Yashaswini, a third-year dental student, was found hanging at her residence. Her sudden death has raised numerous questions, prompting both an official police case and a separate institutional review.

According to family members, the young woman had been subjected to humiliation and harassment by college authorities, which they believe drove her to take such an extreme step. Her parents, Parimala and Bhudevaiah, expressed their grief and anger, stating that their daughter was their only child and that the alleged mistreatment was unbearable.

Family Alleges Public Humiliation

Yashaswini’s mother recounted that her daughter had taken leave on Wednesday, citing eye pain as a reason. When she returned to college the following day, she was reportedly reprimanded in front of her peers for not participating in a seminar. The family firmly believes that this public embarrassment was the breaking point that led to the devastating outcome.

The loss has sparked outrage among fellow students, who gathered outside the mortuary to stage a protest. Demonstrators demanded swift and stringent action against those responsible for creating a hostile environment for the deceased student. Their voices have amplified calls for accountability within the institution.

Legal Proceedings Underway

Local police have registered a case in connection with the incident and have initiated a detailed investigation. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, including the allegations of harassment raised by the family. Further updates are expected as the inquiry unfolds, with both law enforcement and the college administration working to ascertain the full sequence of events leading to this unfortunate loss.

The college has not yet issued additional comments beyond its initial statement, but the suspension of the six faculty members signals a serious approach to addressing the concerns raised by the student’s family and the wider student body.
