Hindu Calendar 2026: A Complete Guide to Major Festivals and Observances

The year 2026 has arrived, bringing with it a vibrant tapestry of Hindu festivals and sacred observances. As the world welcomes the new year, the Hindu lunar calendar, or Panchang, offers a detailed roadmap of auspicious dates, religious celebrations, and traditional rituals. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant festivals in 2026, helping devotees plan their year ahead with clarity and devotion.

According to the Hindu Panchang, the year 2026 begins on January 1 with the Dwadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Pausha, under the Krittika nakshatra. The first day of the year is marked by the formation of several auspicious yogas, setting a positive tone for the months to come.

January 2026: Harvest Festivals and the Arrival of Spring

The festive calendar kicks off in the second week of January. On January 13, the vibrant harvest festival of Lohri will be celebrated, primarily in northern India, with bonfires, songs, and community gatherings. The following day, January 14, marks Makar Sankranti, a major solar festival observed across the country under different names, including Pongal in Tamil Nadu. This day signifies the sun’s transition into Capricorn and the beginning of longer days.

Later in the month, on January 23, Basant Panchami will be observed. This festival heralds the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. Devotees often wear yellow attire and offer prayers for wisdom and creativity.

February and March 2026: Shivratri, Holi, and Navratri

February brings one of the most important nights in the Hindu calendar. Mahashivratri, the great night of Lord Shiva, falls on February 15. Devotees observe fasts, stay awake through the night, and perform special rituals to seek blessings for spiritual growth and inner peace.

March is a month of vibrant celebrations. Holi, the festival of colors, will be celebrated on March 4, marking the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring. People smear each other with colored powders, share sweets, and rejoice in the spirit of unity and joy.

Shortly after, on March 19, Chaitra Navratri begins. This nine-day festival is dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Devotees observe fasts, perform pujas, and engage in spiritual practices. The festival concludes with Ram Navami on March 26, which celebrates the birth of Lord Rama.

April 2026: Baisakhi and Akshaya Tritiya

April is marked by two significant observances. On April 14, Baisakhi will be celebrated, particularly in Punjab and other northern regions. This harvest festival also holds religious importance for Sikhs as it commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth. Later, on April 19, Akshaya Tritiya falls, considered one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. Many people begin new ventures, make investments, or purchase gold on this day, believing it brings lasting prosperity.

July 2026: Rath Yatra and Guru Purnima

The month of July features two major events. On July 16, the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath will take place in Puri, Odisha. This spectacular chariot festival draws millions of devotees who pull the massive chariots through the streets. Later, on July 29, Guru Purnima will be observed, a day dedicated to honoring spiritual teachers and gurus. Disciples express gratitude and seek blessings from their mentors.

August 2026: Teej, Rakshabandhan, and Onam

August is packed with festivals. On August 15, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated, primarily by women who pray for marital bliss and the well-being of their families. August 17 marks Nag Panchami, a day dedicated to the worship of snakes, which are considered sacred in Hindu tradition. On August 26, the harvest festival of Onam will be celebrated in Kerala with elaborate feasts, flower decorations, and traditional dances.

Rakshabandhan, one of the most beloved festivals, falls on August 28. On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread, or rakhi, on their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing love and protection. The month ends with Kajari Teej on August 31, another festival observed by married women for the longevity and happiness of their husbands.

September 2026: Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Anant Chaturdashi

September begins with Janmashtami on September 4, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotees fast, sing devotional songs, and reenact scenes from Krishna’s life. On September 14, two festivals coincide: Ganesh Chaturthi, honoring the elephant-headed god of wisdom, and Hartalika Teej, a significant fasting day for married women. The month concludes with Anant Chaturdashi on September 25, which marks the immersion of Lord Ganesha idols.

October 2026: Navratri, Dussehra, and Karwa Chauth

October is a month of intense devotion and celebration. Sharadiya Navratri begins on October 11, another nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. This is followed by Dussehra on October 20, which commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana. Effigies of Ravana are burned in grand public celebrations. On October 29, Karwa Chauth will be observed, a day-long fast undertaken by married women for the long life and prosperity of their husbands.

November 2026: Diwali, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath Puja

November is dominated by the five-day Diwali festival, the most widely celebrated Hindu festival. The festivities begin with Dhanteras on November 6, when people purchase gold, silver, or utensils for good luck. The main day of Diwali and Narak Chaturdashi falls on November 8, marked by lighting lamps, bursting fireworks, and offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi. Govardhan Puja is observed on November 10, followed by Bhai Dooj on November 11, a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters. The month concludes with the grand Chhath Puja on November 15, dedicated to the Sun God, predominantly observed in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
