CBI Takes Custody of NEET Accused From Nashik for Two Days

The Central Bureau of Investigation has intensified its probe into the NEET paper leak case with a fresh arrest and a crucial legal move. The agency apprehended suspect Shubham Khairnar from Nashik and subsequently secured a two-day transit remand to facilitate further interrogation and procedural follow-up.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Khairnar, a 30-year-old resident of Nandgaon in Nashik district, was taken into custody late Tuesday night by the central investigating agency. On Wednesday, he was produced before a local magistrate’s court, where the CBI requested permission to transport him to Delhi for continued questioning. The agency argued before the court that the involvement of additional individuals in other states could not be ruled out at this stage, making custodial interrogation of the accused essential.

The court accepted the submission and granted a two-day transit remand. Investigators are expected to move Khairnar to the national capital for deeper questioning in the coming days.

How the Accused Was Apprehended

The arrest was carried out by the Crime Branch Unit 2 of Nashik Police, acting on a formal request from Rajasthan Police. Khairnar was picked up from the Indira Nagar locality of Nashik. The coordinated effort highlights the multi-state scope of the investigation.

Background of the Case

The controversy surrounding the NEET (UG) 2026 examination has taken a serious turn. The test, originally scheduled for May 3 and meant to govern admissions into undergraduate medical courses across colleges, was cancelled on Tuesday amid allegations of a question paper leak. Following the cancellation, the central government directed the CBI to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the reported irregularities.

Key developments in the case so far:

  • The exam was scrapped after leak allegations emerged.
  • A coordinated arrest operation led to Khairnar’s detention in Nashik.
  • The CBI has secured transit remand to continue interrogation in Delhi.
  • Agencies suspect possible involvement of more individuals across multiple states.

With the probe now expanding beyond Maharashtra, the CBI is likely to question Khairnar extensively to trace the origins of the leak and identify any wider network behind the malpractice. Further arrests and revelations are anticipated as the investigation progresses.
