CBI Launches Formal Investigation into NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) concerning the alleged paper leak and irregularities tied to the NEET UG 2026 examination, which was conducted on May 3, 2026. The development marks a significant escalation in the probe into one of the country’s most critical medical entrance tests.

According to officials, the exam—held for admission to undergraduate medical programs—was annulled after reports of malpractice surfaced. The central government has since handed over the comprehensive inquiry to the CBI to ensure an impartial and thorough investigation.

Complaint Filed by Higher Education Department

The FIR was registered based on a written complaint received from the Department of Higher Education, operating under the Ministry of Education. The agency has invoked multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to criminal conspiracy, fraud, criminal breach of trust, theft, and destruction of evidence.

In addition, charges have been levied under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. These legal provisions reflect the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter, given the scale and significance of the NEET UG examination.

Special Teams Deployed Across the Country

To accelerate the investigation, the CBI has formed specialized teams that have been dispatched to multiple locations nationwide. Investigators are expected to trace the paper leak network, examine financial transactions linked to the case, and determine the roles of all individuals involved.

The agency’s focus will include identifying how the question paper was compromised, who facilitated the leak, and whether any organized syndicate was operating behind the scenes. The examination of digital footprints and communication records is also likely to be a key part of the probe.

Timeline of Events Leading to the Cancellation

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the NEET UG exam, reported that inputs regarding suspected irregularities were received on the evening of May 7—four days after the test was held. By the morning of May 8, the matter had been referred to central agencies for independent investigation and necessary action.

Following a review of preliminary findings and inputs from law enforcement bodies, the government approved the decision to cancel the May 3 examination. The NTA has confirmed that a re-examination will be conducted, with new dates to be announced in due course.

Massive Scale of the Examination

The NEET UG 2026 exam was conducted across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. Approximately 2.3 million registered candidates appeared for the test, making it one of the largest medical entrance examinations in the world. The scale of the exam underscores the logistical complexity involved in organizing a fresh test and the importance of ensuring its integrity.

Candidates and parents have been advised to await official announcements regarding the revised schedule. The NTA has assured stakeholders that the re-examination will be conducted with enhanced security measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

As the CBI deepens its investigation, the agency is expected to question key individuals associated with the examination process and scrutinize all relevant documentation. The outcome of the probe will be crucial in restoring confidence in the examination system and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
