CBSE Introduces Two-Level Mathematics and Science for Classes 9 and 10
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant structural reform for students in Classes 9 and 10. Under the new framework, Mathematics and Science will now be offered at two distinct levels—Standard and Advanced—giving learners the flexibility to choose a path that aligns with their individual aptitude and academic goals. This change will take effect from the upcoming academic session, with the first board examination under this system scheduled for 2028.
Implementation Timeline and Scope
Beginning in the 2026–27 academic session, Class 9 students will experience the dual-level approach in both Mathematics and Science. The initiative is part of the board’s broader alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the revised National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The first Class 10 board exam featuring this two-tier structure will be conducted in 2028, marking a milestone in the board’s attempt to modernize secondary education.
Understanding the Two-Level System
Under the new arrangement, all students will be required to study the Standard curriculum in both subjects. This foundational level ensures that every learner gains a solid understanding of core concepts. At the end of the academic year, students will appear for a common examination worth 80 marks, lasting three hours.
For those who demonstrate higher proficiency or wish to pursue more challenging material, the board offers an optional Advanced level. Students may choose to take this additional tier in one or both subjects, depending on their interests and capabilities. This structure is designed to cater to a wide range of learners—from those who prefer a steady pace to those who seek greater academic rigor.
Three-Language Formula and Exemptions
In addition to the changes in Mathematics and Science, CBSE is also rolling out the mandatory three-language formula for Class 6 students, effective from 2026. As per the NCF recommendations, at least two of the three languages must be native Indian languages. The languages are organized into a structured framework comprising three stages, ensuring a systematic approach to language learning.
However, the board has also made provisions for special cases. If a student transfers from a school abroad and the third language they studied up to Class 8 or 9 is not available in Indian schools, they may be granted an exemption based on specified criteria. This flexibility is intended to accommodate the diverse educational backgrounds of students while maintaining the integrity of the policy.

The introduction of a two-tier system in core subjects like Mathematics and Science is a welcome move for many.
