CBSE Addresses QR Code Concerns Following Class 12 Mathematics Examination

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released an official statement addressing the recent controversy surrounding QR codes found on Class 12 mathematics question papers. The board has firmly assured students, parents, and educational institutions that all examination papers are completely secure and authentic, with no compromise on examination integrity.

What Sparked the Controversy?

The issue gained traction when students appearing for the mathematics examination on March 9, 2026, discovered QR codes printed on their question paper sets. Upon scanning these codes with their smartphones, several students reported being redirected to a popular YouTube video rather than any official CBSE verification page. This unexpected outcome quickly went viral on social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly known as Twitter), where numerous students shared images of their question papers highlighting the unusual QR codes.

One social media user posted about a friend’s mathematics paper, expressing surprise that scanning the QR code led to unexpected content. The post quickly garnered widespread attention, with many students and parents expressing concerns about whether the question papers were genuine or if there had been a security breach in the examination process.

Board’s Official Response

In response to the growing concerns, CBSE has issued a clear and detailed clarification. The board has emphasized that all question papers distributed across examination centers were authentic and had undergone the standard security protocols. According to officials, QR codes are an integral part of the security features embedded in question papers, designed to facilitate quick verification of authenticity when needed.

The board acknowledged the reports about QR codes linking to unrelated content but maintained that this does not indicate any compromise in the examination process. Officials have stated that the security framework surrounding the examination remains robust, and all papers were distributed through proper channels following established procedures.

Reassurance for Students and Parents

CBSE has taken this matter seriously and assured stakeholders that appropriate measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in future examinations. The board has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of examination security and integrity.

Parents and students have been explicitly reassured that the examination process remains trustworthy and transparent. The board confirmed that all question papers were correctly distributed and that there is no evidence to suggest any paper leakage or unauthorized access to examination materials.

Security Measures in Place

The board highlighted that multiple layers of security are incorporated into the question paper system. These include:

  • QR codes for quick authenticity verification
  • Secure printing and distribution protocols
  • Strict chain-of-custody procedures
  • Regular monitoring and verification systems

Officials explained that QR codes serve as a verification tool and are part of a broader security architecture designed to protect the examination process. Any technical glitch or unexpected behavior of these codes does not undermine the overall security framework in place.

Examination Schedule and Updates

All CBSE board examinations are being conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper format, with sessions commencing at 10:30 AM across all examination centers. In a separate development, the board has announced the postponement of Class 12 examinations in select Middle East locations, including Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, until March 16, 2026. This decision was made in light of the ongoing regional situation and to ensure the safety and well-being of students and examination staff in those areas.

The board continues to monitor the situation closely and has assured all stakeholders that any further updates will be communicated through official channels. Students appearing for upcoming examinations are advised to remain focused on their preparation and trust the established examination system.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information through official sources, especially during examination periods when misinformation can easily spread. CBSE remains committed to conducting fair and secure examinations while maintaining open communication with all stakeholders involved in the education ecosystem.
