The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to commence the second phase of the Class 10 board examinations from May 15, 2026. This optional examination window will remain open until May 21, 2026, offering students a valuable opportunity to enhance their scores in up to three subjects. Under the newly introduced dual-examination framework, the better of the two scores achieved by a candidate will be considered for the final mark sheet and certificate.
Exam Schedule and Timings
According to the official timetable released by the board, the second examination will begin with the Mathematics paper, while the final test will be conducted for Social Science. All examinations are scheduled to be held in a single shift, commencing at 10:30 AM. Depending on the subject, the duration of the exam will extend until either 12:30 PM or 1:30 PM. Students are advised to verify the specific end time for each of their chosen subjects.
Purpose of the Second Examination
The introduction of this second board examination marks a significant shift in the assessment structure from 2026. While participation in the first board exam remains compulsory for all students, the second exam is entirely voluntary. The primary objective behind this initiative is to provide learners with a second chance to improve their performance without losing an entire academic year. This approach is designed to reduce exam-related stress and allow students to aim for higher achievement in subjects where they may have underperformed initially.
Subjects and Score Improvement
Students can opt to reappear for a maximum of three subjects, which include Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and language papers. Essential Guidelines for Exam Day

- Reporting Time: Entry into the examination hall will be strictly prohibited after 10:00 AM. Students are strongly advised to plan their travel keeping in mind potential traffic congestion and weather conditions. Arriving at the exam centre well in advance is highly recommended.
- Dress Code and Identification: It is mandatory for all examinees to wear their respective school uniforms. Candidates must also carry their school identity card along with the official CBSE admit card. Failure to produce these documents may result in denial of entry.
- Prohibited Items: The use of mobile phones and any other electronic gadgets, including smartwatches, is strictly banned within the examination premises. Students are permitted to carry only the specified stationary items required for the test.
Warning Against Misinformation
In a move to maintain the integrity of the examination process, the board has issued a stern warning to students regarding social media. Candidates are advised to refrain from spreading rumors or sharing any content related to the examination on platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, or X (formerly Twitter). Engaging in such activities could lead to serious consequences as per board regulations.
Result Declaration and Certificates
Results for the second board examination are expected to be announced by the end of June 2026. Students who choose not to participate in this optional round will be able to secure admission to Class 11 based on their performance in the first examination. The results will be made accessible through the DigiLocker platform, providing a convenient and digital method for students to view and download their scorecards.
Furthermore, the board has clarified that the final passing certificates and merit certificates will only be issued after the results of the second examination are officially declared. This means that all students, regardless of whether they took the optional exam, will receive their formal documents once this process is completed.
