CBSE Defends On-Screen Marking System, Confirms Re-Evaluation Will Continue for Class 12
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has addressed growing concerns over Class 12 evaluation by publicly defending its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. In an official statement, the board confirmed that the re-evaluation option for students remains fully operational, aiming to reinforce trust among students and parents regarding the assessment process.
Board Clarifies Purpose of OSM System
Responding to a wave of social media discussions following the announcement of Class 12 results, CBSE issued a clarification on its official X handle. The board explained that the OSM system was introduced specifically to bring greater uniformity, fairness, and transparency to the evaluation of answer sheets across all subjects and regions.
The statement highlighted that OSM enables a step-by-step marking approach, which strengthens the consistency and objectivity of the entire assessment framework. This method, according to the board, has been a cornerstone of its evaluation philosophy for years and continues to uphold the integrity of the examination process.
Concerns had been raised by students, particularly regarding marks obtained in core science and mathematics subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. CBSE’s response appears aimed at quelling these anxieties by reiterating the robustness of its digital marking infrastructure.
Re-Evaluation Process Remains Available
In a key assurance, CBSE emphasized that students dissatisfied with their results will continue to have access to the re-evaluation process. This facility, the board noted, underscores its ongoing commitment to fairness, equity, and transparency in dealing with student outcomes.
Students are permitted to apply for photocopies of their evaluated answer scripts. In cases where discrepancies are identified, they can formally request corrective action through the prescribed channels established by the board. CBSE clarified that all such requests must follow the official mechanism to ensure proper processing and resolution.
Pass Percentage Dips Slightly
This year, CBSE announced that more than 85 percent of Class 12 students successfully cleared their examinations. However, the overall pass rate witnessed a decline of over three percentage points compared to the previous academic year.
A significant development this year was the complete transition to the OSM system for evaluating all Class 12 answer sheets. This was the first instance where the board relied entirely on the digital marking platform, marking a major shift from traditional paper-based evaluation methods.
The combination of a slightly lower pass rate and the debut of full-scale digital evaluation has fueled discussions among educators and parents alike. CBSE’s proactive communication seeks to clarify that the new system is designed to protect student interests while modernizing the examination process.
The board has urged students and parents to utilize the official re-evaluation and verification services if they have any doubts about their marks. By maintaining these channels, CBSE aims to balance technological advancement with accountability, ensuring that every student receives a fair and accurate assessment of their performance.
