Congress Alleges Massive CBSE Answer Sheet Leak, Demands Accountability

The Congress party has leveled serious accusations against the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), claiming that answer sheets of approximately 2 million Class 12 students have been exposed online. Party leaders have characterized this as a significant breach of student privacy and are demanding a thorough investigation into what they describe as gross negligence by the education ministry.

Congress Leader Calls Out Ministry’s Track Record

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media to criticize the government’s handling of the situation, referring to the education ministry as a “ministry of scandals” under the current administration. Ramesh highlighted that the compromised data includes answer sheets from the 2026 Class 12 examinations, raising serious concerns about the security protocols in place.

The Congress leader pointed out that this incident reveals systemic failures within the systems deployed by the education board. He emphasized that the exposure of such sensitive student data represents not just a technical glitch but a fundamental breakdown in the protection of students’ personal information.

Questions Raised Over Contracting Process

Ramesh specifically targeted the role of COEMPT, the company entrusted with digitizing and scanning answer sheets. He alleged that this firm was awarded the contract under questionable circumstances, suggesting that technical specifications in the request for proposal (RFP) may have been manipulated to favor the company.

The Congress leader noted that the quality of scanned answer sheets appears compromised, with visible distortions and shadows suggesting they were captured using mobile phones rather than professional scanning equipment. This observation has prompted questions about whether the contractual requirements for robotic scanners were quietly removed during the tendering process.

Security Vulnerabilities Exposed

Further scrutiny has revealed potential vulnerabilities in the board’s digital infrastructure. Reports indicate that improperly configured cloud storage systems may have allowed unauthorized access to examination materials, including answer sheets and question papers from the 2026 examination cycle.

Ramesh questioned why such basic security measures were overlooked, particularly given the sensitive nature of the data involved. He argued that the board’s failure to implement proper security configurations demonstrates a troubling pattern of negligence in handling student information.

Demand for Independent Investigation

The Congress party has intensified its criticism of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, reiterating its demand for his resignation. Party representatives have called for a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into what they describe as widespread corruption and carelessness in the planning and execution of the Class 12 board examinations.

Ramesh referenced two separate investigations—one conducted by a Class 12 student and another by a media outlet—that have raised fresh concerns about the implementation of the on-screen marking (OSM) system for evaluating answer sheets. These investigations have reportedly uncovered inconsistencies in the board’s preparedness and intentions regarding the digital evaluation process.

Political Leadership Under Fire

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also weighed in on the controversy, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of remaining silent on the matter. Gandhi suggested that the lack of any action against the education minister indicates that the government prioritizes its own survival over the futures of millions of students affected by this breach.

The opposition party has framed this incident as part of a broader pattern of mismanagement within the education sector. Party members argue that such failures not only compromise student data but also undermine confidence in the examination system as a whole.

Broader Implications for Students

The exposure of answer sheets carries significant implications for the students involved. Beyond the immediate privacy concerns, the incident raises questions about the integrity of the examination process and the fairness of evaluations conducted under such circumstances.

Parents and education advocates have expressed alarm at the scale of the data breach, noting that the affected students represent one of the largest cohorts in the board’s history. The incident has sparked wider discussions about the need for robust data protection measures in educational institutions across the country.

The controversy continues to unfold as opposition parties press for concrete action and accountability. With demands for investigation growing louder, the education ministry faces mounting pressure to address the security lapses and restore public confidence in the examination system.
