CBSE Re-Evaluation Portal Secured After IIT Panel Review
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has received security clearance from a panel of IIT experts for its re-evaluation portal, paving the way for the resumption of the answer sheet review process. This development follows a series of cyberattack attempts that raised serious concerns about the safety of student data and examination records.
Cyberattack Attempt Disrupted Operations
On June 3, the board’s re-evaluation platform came under a significant cyber assault. Attackers reportedly flooded the system with approximately 3.8 million malicious data packets in an apparent bid to cripple operations. The timing of the attack suggested an intention to disrupt the verification and re-evaluation of answer sheets, which were underway at the time.
Security experts believe the assault was specifically designed to compromise the integrity of the evaluation process. Despite the scale of the attack, board officials maintained that all services, including verification, answer sheet viewing, and re-evaluation requests, continued to function without interruption.
IIT Experts Conduct Thorough Security Review
In response to the security breaches, CBSE sought assistance from cybersecurity specialists at IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. Teams from both institutions conducted an exhaustive technical assessment of the portal, examining its infrastructure for vulnerabilities and testing its resilience against potential threats.
Following this comprehensive review, the IIT panel granted formal security approval to the revised portal. A member of the panel revealed that the previously used Coempt EduTeck system contained multiple security weaknesses that could have allowed unauthorized access to sensitive data and records. The experts identified several potential entry points through which confidential information might have been compromised.
Enhanced Security Framework Implemented
Based on these findings, CBSE decided to discontinue its association with Coempt EduTeck Pvt Ltd for scanning answer sheets during the ongoing re-evaluation cycle. Instead, the board has adopted a modified, more secure system designed to address the identified vulnerabilities.
The new portal retains all essential features required for the evaluation process while incorporating additional layers of protection. These enhancements focus on strengthening data security and eliminating the weaknesses uncovered during the technical review. The system has been engineered to ensure the safety of examination-related sensitive information throughout the evaluation workflow.
Extensive Technical Upgrades Completed
A senior CBSE official confirmed that the cybersecurity team at IIT Kanpur spent more than ten days working on two critical systems: the board’s registration portal and the OSM re-evaluation platform. The specialists implemented numerous technical modifications to fortify the security architecture of both systems against future attack attempts.
The upgrades included measures to prevent denial-of-service attacks, which had been used in the June 3 incident. Additional safeguards were put in place to protect against unauthorized data access and other forms of cyber intrusion.
Data Migration to Board Servers
In a significant operational change, CBSE has transferred all answer sheet data and related records to its own servers. This move gives the board greater control over security protocols and day-to-day management of sensitive examination materials. The migration is expected to reduce reliance on third-party infrastructure and streamline oversight of the evaluation process.
Board officials stated that this transition would enhance both security and operational efficiency, allowing for more direct monitoring of data access and system performance.
High Volume of Applications Received
Despite the security challenges, the post-result grievance redressal system has seen substantial activity. As of June 4, the board had received a total of 70,433 applications. Of these, 7,314 were requests for marks verification, while the remaining 63,119 were applications for re-evaluation of answer sheets.
The large number of applications underscores the importance of maintaining a secure and functional platform. With the IIT panel’s clearance now in place, CBSE can proceed with processing these requests without further delays related to security concerns.
