CBSE Certificate Correction Fees Set to Rise Fivefold
Students appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 and Class 12 examinations will soon need to shell out significantly more for corrections to their official certificates. Beginning in 2026, the board has revised the fee structure for amendments, making it five times more expensive than before.
Under the updated policy, students seeking changes to their name, parents’ names, or date of birth on their certificates will be required to pay ₹5,000 instead of the earlier ₹1,000. The decision follows approval from the board’s governing body, which has formally accepted the recommendations put forward by its examination committee.
Why the Fee Hike?
The move comes as part of CBSE’s broader effort to encourage accuracy during the initial registration process. Schools have consistently been advised to exercise extreme caution while preparing the List of Candidates for both Class 10 and Class 12 examinations. The board has repeatedly emphasized that meticulous verification at the school level can prevent errors from appearing in the final marksheets and certificates.
CBSE reportedly issues anywhere between ten to fifteen reminders to schools, urging them to double-check all demographic details before submission. Despite these repeated warnings, regional offices across the country continue to receive a steady stream of requests for corrections in student particulars, including names and birth dates.
Rising Number of Correction Requests
The volume of such applications has been substantial over the past two years. Data from CBSE’s regional offices reveals the following number of correction requests received:
- Prayagraj region: 6,411 requests
- Ajmer region: 3,986 requests
- Patna region: 3,340 requests
- Panchkula region: 2,535 requests
- Chennai region: 710 requests
Officials also noted that many of these applications are incomplete or lack clear supporting documentation. In some instances, students have even resorted to approaching the courts, submitting correction requests through legal notices after their initial appeals were not processed.
New Fee Structure and Applicability
The revised charges will apply specifically to students who pass their examinations in 2026 and beyond. Along with the increased base fee, the board has also introduced a late penalty clause. For every additional year of delay in applying for a correction, students will need to pay an extra ₹1,000 on top of the standard fee.
However, there is some relief for those who completed their schooling earlier. CBSE has clarified that students who passed their exams up to and including 2025 will continue to be governed by the old fee structure of ₹1,000 for certificate amendments. This means the increased charges will not be retrospectively applied to previously issued certificates.
The board’s decision reflects a clear intent to streamline administrative processes while reducing the burden of unnecessary corrections. By making the process more expensive, CBSE hopes to incentivize schools and students alike to ensure that all details are verified and accurate from the very beginning, thereby minimizing the need for post-result alterations.
