CBSE Announces UPU 2026 Letter Writing Competition for Students
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has opened applications for students eager to showcase their writing skills on an international stage. The board is inviting young learners to participate in the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) 2026 International Letter Writing Competition, an event that celebrates the timeless art of letter writing while offering impressive rewards.
The winner at the national level will receive a cash prize of ₹50,000 along with a certificate of achievement. Beyond the monetary reward, the top-ranked letter from India will be forwarded to represent the country at the global competition, giving students a chance to earn international recognition for their creative expression.
Theme for This Year’s Competition
This year, participants will craft a letter to a friend exploring the theme: “Why Human Connection Matters in a Digital World.” The topic encourages young writers to reflect on the importance of meaningful relationships and authentic communication in an era dominated by technology and virtual interactions.
Students may write their entries in English or in any of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. All participating schools are required to organize the competition at their premises and submit the collected letters to their respective circles by March 20, 2026. Following a thorough review, each circle will forward the top three entries to the directorate by March 31, 2026.
Who Can Participate
The competition is open to all students aged between 9 and 15 years. However, individuals who will turn 16 before May 5, 2026, are not eligible to participate. Age verification will be conducted using official documents such as birth certificates, Aadhaar cards, or certificates issued by the school.
Entries must be handwritten on plain paper and submitted with three passport-sized photographs attached to the application. Importantly, letters sent directly by individuals or schools will not be accepted—all submissions must go through the designated school and circle channels.
Prize Structure at Various Levels
The competition offers attractive cash rewards at both the circle and national levels, ensuring that talented writers are recognized at every stage of the selection process.
Circle Level Awards
- First Prize: ₹25,000
- Second Prize: ₹10,000
- Third Prize: ₹5,000
National Level Awards
- First Prize: ₹50,000
- Second Prize: ₹25,000
- Third Prize: ₹10,000
International Recognition and Opportunities
Once the national winner is determined, the winning letter will be submitted to the Universal Postal Union for consideration at the international level. The UPU will evaluate entries from participating countries and select global winners who will receive medals and certificates—gold for first place, silver for second, and bronze for third. Additional prizes may also be awarded at the discretion of the UPU.
A particularly exciting opportunity awaits the gold medal winner: an invitation to visit the UPU headquarters in Bern, Switzerland. In cases where travel is not feasible, an alternative prize of equal value will be offered instead.
Application Process and Key Guidelines
Students interested in participating must complete an application form that includes the following details:

The completed application form, along with a copy of the age proof document, must be submitted in duplicate to the nodal officer of the respective postal circle before the deadline set by that circle. One copy of the application will serve as the hall ticket on the day of the competition.
Answer booklets will be provided by the school or department, but participants must bring their own pen or pencil. The letter must be handwritten and should not exceed 800 words. Any entry exceeding this word limit will not be evaluated.
