The Sacred Geography of the 52 Shakti Peethas: Where Divine Fragments Fell

As Chaitra Navratri approaches, beginning on March 19, 2026, millions of devotees prepare to honor the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. This nine-day festival is a time of profound spiritual significance, drawing pilgrims to the most revered temples across the Indian subcontinent. Among these, the 52 Shakti Peethas hold a uniquely sacred place in Hindu tradition, representing the very spots where parts of Goddess Sati’s body are believed to have fallen to earth.

The Legend Behind the Shakti Peethas

The story begins with a great insult. King Daksha, father of Sati, organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ritual) but deliberately excluded his daughter Sati and her husband, Lord Shiva. When Sati arrived uninvited, she faced humiliation and, unable to bear the disrespect shown to her husband, immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.

When Lord Shiva learned of Sati’s death, his grief transformed into a furious cosmic dance, the Tandava, as he carried her lifeless body across the universe. To prevent the destruction this dance was causing, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember Sati’s body into 52 pieces. Wherever each fragment landed became a Shakti Peetha—a seat of divine feminine power.

These sacred sites are not confined to India alone. They stretch across Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, each holding a distinct energy and a unique story of the body part that came to rest there.

Shakti Peethas in Eastern India

West Bengal and Assam

The eastern region of India houses a remarkable concentration of Shakti Peethas, particularly in West Bengal and Assam. The Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, is one of the most famous, where Sati’s yoni (female reproductive organ) is said to have fallen. This temple is a major center for Tantric worship and draws thousands during the Ambubachi Mela.

In Kolkata, the Kalighat Temple marks the spot where Sati’s right foot landed. The nearby Kalika Devi Shakti Peetha in the same region is associated with her right big toe. Other significant sites in West Bengal include:

  • Vibhash (Kapalini Devi) in Purba Medinipur, where the left heel fell
  • Ratnavali (Kumari Shakti Peetha) in Hooghly, associated with the right shoulder
  • Bahula Shakti Peetha in Bardhaman, where the left arm came to rest
  • Nalhati Shakti Peetha in Birbhum, linked to a leg bone
  • Vimala Shakti Peetha in Murshidabad, where Sati’s crown landed
  • Bhramari Devi Shakti Peetha in Jalpaiguri, associated with the left foot
  • Mahishamardini Shakti Peetha in Bakreshwar, where the space between the eyebrows fell
  • Yugadha Shakti Peetha in Bardhaman, linked to the right thumb
  • Phullara Devi Shakti Peetha in Attahas, where the lower lip landed
  • Mangal Chandrika Shakti Peetha in Bardhaman, associated with the right wrist

Shakti Peethas in Western and Central India

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra

Western India holds several powerful Shakti Peethas. In Junagadh, Gujarat, the Chandrabhaga Shakti Peetha is where Sati’s stomach is believed to have fallen. The Ambaji Temple, nestled in the Aravalli range of Gujarat, marks the spot of her heart—making it one of the most emotionally resonant sites for devotees.

Rajasthan claims the Manibandh Shakti Peetha in Pushkar, where Sati’s wristbands landed, and the Ambika Shakti Peetha in Virat, associated with the toes of her left foot.

In Madhya Pradesh, the Shonadev Narmata Shakti Peetha in Amarkantak is linked to Sati’s right buttock, while the Harsiddhi Devi Shakti Peetha in Ujjain marks the place where her elbow fell.

Maharashtra houses the Bhramari Shakti Peetha, associated with Sati’s chin.

Shakti Peethas in Northern India

Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana

The northern belt is rich with sacred sites. In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the Manikarnika Shakti Peetha is linked to Sati’s earrings. The Lalita Devi Shakti Peetha in Prayagraj marks where a finger landed, while the Ramgiri Shakti Peetha in Chitrakoot is associated with her right breast. In Vrindavan, the Uma Shakti Peetha is where her hair bun and crown jewel fell. The Devi Patan Shakti Peetha in Balrampur marks the left shoulder.

In Himachal Pradesh, the Jwala Ji Shakti Peetha in Kangra is where Sati’s tongue fell, and the Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur is associated with her eyes. The Mahamaya Shakti Peetha in Pahalgam, Kashmir, marks the spot of her throat.

Punjab’s Tripuramalini Shakti Peetha in Jalandhar is linked to Sati’s left breast. In Haryana, the Savitri Shakti Peetha in Kurukshetra marks her heel, while the Bhadrakali Devikup Temple in the same region is associated with her right ankle.

Shakti Peethas in South India

Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tripura

Southern India holds its own share of these divine sites. In Tamil Nadu, the Bhadrakali Shakti Peetha is linked to Sati’s back, while the Shuchi Shakti Peetha in Kanyakumari marks her upper molar. In Karnataka, the Karnat Shakti Peetha is associated with both ears.

Andhra Pradesh houses the Sarvashail Ramahrendri Shakti Peetha, where Sati’s cheek fell, and the Shrishailam Shakti Peetha in Kurnool, linked to her right ankle bracelet.

In Odisha, the Vimala Devi Shakti Peetha in Utkala is where Sati’s navel landed. Tripura’s Matabari Shakti Peetha in Udaipur marks the spot of her right foot.

Shakti Peethas Beyond India

Bangladesh and Nepal

Several Shakti Peethas lie outside India’s borders. In Bangladesh, the Chattal Bhavani Shakti Peetha is associated with Sati’s right arm, the Sugandha Shakti Peetha with her nose, and the Jayanti Shakti Peetha with her left thigh.

Nepal also holds sacred connections. The Tripuramalini Shakti Peetha in Jalandhar, though in Punjab’s modern boundaries, is sometimes listed with Nepal’s sites in certain traditions due to its transregional significance.

The Spiritual Significance of the Shakti Peethas

Each Shakti Peetha is more than a historical or mythological landmark. These sites are considered living embodiments of divine feminine energy. Devotees believe that visiting these temples during Navratri amplifies spiritual benefits, as the cosmic energy of the goddess is especially accessible during this period.

The diversity of body parts represented—from the heart and eyes to the tongue and toes—symbolizes the completeness of the goddess’s presence in the world. Every part of her being, from the most vital to the seemingly minor, became a source of blessing for humanity.

For pilgrims undertaking a journey during Chaitra Navratri 2026, these 52 Shakti Peethas offer a profound spiritual itinerary. Whether one visits the famous Kamakhya Temple in Assam, the ancient Kalighat in Kolkata, or the serene Naina Devi in Himachal, each site provides a unique window into the timeless story of Sati and Shiva—a tale of love, loss, and the eternal power of the divine feminine.
