The Hidden Sanctuary of Arbuda Devi: A 5,500-Year-Old Shakti Peeth

Deep within the rocky terrain of Mount Abu in Rajasthan’s Sirohi district lies a temple that has drawn pilgrims for millennia. The Arbuda Devi Temple, also known as Adhar Devi, is counted among the 51 sacred Shakti Peeths—holy sites where body parts of the goddess Sati are believed to have fallen. What sets this temple apart is the unique form in which the goddess is worshipped: her hidden, or gupta, manifestation.

The Legend Behind the Name ‘Adhar Devi’

According to ancient lore, the spot where the temple now stands marks the place where the goddess’s lips (adhar) touched the earth. This is how the shrine earned its name, Adhar Devi. References in the Skanda Purana describe the goddess residing in this cave as Katyani, the sixth form of Durga. Interestingly, the temple is also spiritually linked to the famous Ambaji shrine in Gujarat, reinforcing the interconnectedness of Shakti worship across western India.

A Cave Shrine Like No Other

The temple is nestled inside a narrow natural cave, so confined that devotees must crouch and crawl to reach the inner sanctum. This deliberate difficulty adds to the sense of reverence and mystery. Within the complex, pilgrims can also pay homage to the Navadurga (nine forms of the goddess), Lord Ganesha, and Neelkanth Mahadev. Local belief holds that a single darshan here can wash away sorrows and bring one closer to liberation.

  • The cave’s cramped passageway forces visitors to abandon their ego and approach the goddess with humility.
  • The main idol is not a full figure but a symbolic representation, emphasizing the “hidden” nature of the deity.
  • Unlike many Shakti Peeths that feature grand idols, this shrine keeps the goddess’s form deliberately understated.

The Ascent of 365 Steps

Reaching the temple requires climbing approximately 365 stone steps from the Mount Abu bus stand, along the road leading to the famous Dilwara Jain Temples. The number of steps is often compared to the days in a year, symbolizing a spiritual journey through time. During the nine nights of Navratri, especially Chaitra Navratri, the hillside comes alive with thousands of devotees who make the climb daily, their chants echoing through the valley.

The climb is steep but manageable, and the reward at the top—a cool, shaded cave with an atmosphere thick with incense and devotion—makes every step worthwhile. The temple remains open throughout the Navratri period, with special rituals conducted each day.

The Slaying of the Demon Basakali

A powerful myth is woven into the fabric of this temple. It tells of a demon named Basakali who, after performing severe penance, received a boon from Lord Shiva that made him invincible. Drunk on power, he began tormenting the gods and disrupting cosmic order. When the devas pleaded for help, Goddess Arbuda manifested on the spot and vanquished the demon, restoring peace to the heavens and the earth.

In memory of this victory, a tradition of worshipping the goddess’s footprints (paduka) was established at the temple. These footprints are considered a tangible reminder of her intervention and are a focal point of devotion during festivals.

Why This Temple Stands Apart

While many Shakti Peeths feature elaborate idols and open courtyards, the Arbuda Devi Temple preserves an ancient, almost secretive form of worship. The goddess is not shown in full glory but is revered in her gupta swaroop—a hidden form that requires faith and persistence to access. This approach mirrors a deeper spiritual truth: the divine often resides not in obvious places but in the quiet, the concealed, and the difficult-to-reach.

For those willing to climb the steps and crawl through the cave, the experience is transformative. The temple does not just offer a glimpse into mythology; it invites visitors to step into a living tradition that has remained unchanged for thousands of years.
