The Rise of AI Apps in 2025: ChatGPT Becomes a Global Powerhouse

The mobile app industry witnessed a seismic shift in 2025, as artificial intelligence applications redefined user behavior and market dynamics. According to the State of Mobile 2026 report by Sensor Tower, ChatGPT emerged as the second most downloaded app worldwide, trailing only behind social media giants. India played a pivotal role in this surge, becoming the second-largest market for ChatGPT after the United States, with over 100 million weekly active users within its borders. This milestone underscores a broader transformation: AI tools are no longer niche experiments but essential components of everyday digital life.

India Leads the Global AI App Download Race

In 2025, generative AI apps achieved a staggering 3.8 billion downloads globally, while their revenue nearly tripled to surpass $5 billion. India stood out as the fastest-growing market, recording a 207% year-over-year increase in downloads. Remarkably, one in every five AI app downloads worldwide now originates from India. This explosive growth signals a departure from the era when mobile usage was dominated by social media and gaming. Instead, AI assistants and productivity tools are carving out a significant share of the digital ecosystem, reshaping how users interact with their devices.

ChatGPT Dominates the AI Landscape

ChatGPT was the undisputed leader among AI apps in 2025, delivering exceptional performance across key metrics:

  • Downloads surged by 148% compared to the previous year.
  • In-app purchase revenue skyrocketed by 254%.
  • Total time spent on the app increased by an extraordinary 426%.

These figures propelled ChatGPT to the second spot among the top 20 most downloaded apps globally, making it the highest-ranked AI app of the year. The app’s success reflects a growing willingness among users to invest time and money into AI-driven experiences, whether for conversation, creativity, or problem-solving.

Competitors Gain Ground Too

While ChatGPT led the pack, other AI applications also posted impressive results. Notable performers included Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Doubao, Perplexity, Grok, Meta AI, and Microsoft Copilot. Interestingly, traditional apps like Adobe Acrobat Reader also appeared in AI download rankings, highlighting a broader trend: generative AI features are being integrated into a wide range of existing platforms. This convergence suggests that AI is becoming a standard expectation rather than a standalone novelty.

Social Media Still Reigns Supreme in Scale

Despite the rapid ascent of AI apps, social media platforms remain the undisputed giants of the mobile world. In 2025, users spent approximately 2.5 trillion hours on social media apps, with the average user dedicating over 90 minutes per day to these platforms. This represents a 5% increase from the previous year. TikTok dominated across all three key metrics—downloads, in-app revenue, and total time spent—reinforcing its position as a global powerhouse. The enduring appeal of social media highlights that while AI is growing fast, it has yet to match the sheer scale of established categories.

Non-Gaming Apps Surpass Gaming in Revenue

A landmark shift occurred in 2025 when non-gaming apps overtook gaming apps in consumer spending for the first time. Mobile game revenue grew by a mere 1%, while game downloads actually declined by 7%. This slowdown indicates that the gaming market is maturing, whereas AI and other utility-focused apps are opening new revenue streams. Users are increasingly willing to pay for subscriptions and premium features in apps that offer tangible value, such as AI assistants, productivity tools, and creative software.

A Structural Transformation in the Mobile Industry

Sensor Tower, which has tracked mobile data since 2014, notes that 2025 could be a turning point for the industry. Overall download numbers remained relatively flat, but revenue continued to climb. This decoupling of downloads from spending suggests a shift in user behavior: people are now more selective about the apps they use but are more willing to pay for high-quality experiences. ChatGPT’s 254% revenue spike is a clear indicator of this trend, as users embrace subscription models and in-app purchases for AI capabilities.

AI Assistants Become a Major Category

The AI assistant category experienced explosive growth in 2025, with time spent in these apps increasing by 426% year-over-year. This category climbed to become the tenth largest in terms of user engagement. It also ranked among the top three fastest-growing categories for both downloads and revenue. The data paints a clear picture: AI assistants are no longer a fringe offering but a central pillar of the mobile app economy, poised for continued expansion in the years ahead.
