Devshayani Ekadashi 2026: The Start of Chaturmas – Dates, Rules, and Spiritual Meaning

In Hindu tradition, the timing of festivals and sacred observances carries deep spiritual weight. As the month of Ashadh approaches, followers prepare for Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as Harishayani or Ashadhi Ekadashi. This day marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to enter a deep yogic sleep in the cosmic ocean of milk. From this Ekadashi until Devotthan Ekadashi, all auspicious ceremonies like engagements, weddings, and housewarming rituals are paused. This article explores the date of Devshayani Ekadashi in 2026 and the significance of Chaturmas.

When Is Devshayani Ekadashi in 2026?

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Devshayani Ekadashi in 2026 falls on July 25. On this day, Lord Vishnu retreats into yoga nidra (divine sleep) for four months, accompanied by Goddess Lakshmi. This event initiates Chaturmas, during which all auspicious activities are traditionally suspended. The period ends with Devotthan Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu awakens.

The Spiritual Importance of Devshayani Ekadashi

Religious texts explain that on the eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight in Ashadh, Lord Vishnu rests in the Kshir Sagar (ocean of milk) for four months. During his sleep, Lord Shiva takes over the governance of the universe. This makes the simultaneous worship of both Vishnu and Shiva especially significant during Chaturmas. The month of Shravan, which falls within this period, is dedicated to intense devotion to Lord Shiva. Engaging in prayers, chanting, meditation, charity, and fasting during these months is believed to yield immense spiritual merit.

The Four Months of Chaturmas

Chaturmas spans from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devotthan Ekadashi. These four months correspond to the lunar months of Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin, and Kartik. Each month carries unique spiritual importance, emphasizing devotion, self-discipline, and inner reflection. Scriptures highlight this period as an ideal time for deepening one’s spiritual practice and seeking divine blessings through austerity and worship.

Why Are Auspicious Events Avoided During Chaturmas?

In Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu’s presence is essential for blessing auspicious ceremonies like weddings and housewarmings. Since he is in yogic sleep during Chaturmas, his divine grace is not available for such events. Therefore, these activities are postponed until Devotthan Ekadashi, when Vishnu awakens. For spiritual seekers, however, these four months are a golden opportunity for focused devotion, self-examination, and penance. The pause in worldly celebrations allows individuals to turn inward and strengthen their connection with the divine.

How to Worship Lord Vishnu on Devshayani Ekadashi

The Ekadashi tithi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On Devshayani Ekadashi, devotees should wake up during Brahma Muhurta (the auspicious pre-dawn period), take a bath, and make a solemn vow to perform the puja. Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with devotion. Offer yellow flowers, yellow sweets, tulsi leaves, and panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar) to the deity. Chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu). In the evening, light a ghee lamp before the idol of Lord Vishnu and perform aarti to conclude the ritual.

Key Observances During Chaturmas

  • Fasting: Many devotees observe partial or full fasts on Ekadashi days and during the entire Chaturmas period.
  • Charity: Donating food, clothes, and essentials to the needy is considered highly meritorious.
  • Scripture Study: Reading holy texts like the Bhagavata Purana or Vishnu Sahasranama is encouraged.
  • Abstinence: Avoiding certain foods like onions, garlic, and grains is common among strict observers.
  • Pilgrimage: While wandering monks halt their travels during Chaturmas, householders may visit nearby temples for prayer.

Devshayani Ekadashi and Chaturmas remind devotees of the cyclical nature of time and the importance of aligning with cosmic rhythms. By honoring this period with devotion and discipline, one can cultivate inner peace and spiritual growth. Whether through fasting, prayer, or simple acts of kindness, the essence of Chaturmas lies in turning the mind toward the divine and away from worldly distractions.
