Delhi Government to Revive Rainwater Harvesting in 75 Schools

The Delhi government has unveiled a significant initiative to strengthen water conservation across the national capital. Under this plan, the administration will restore and refurbish existing rainwater harvesting systems in 75 CM Shri schools. The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the development, highlighting the project’s potential to conserve approximately 50 crore litres of rainwater annually.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewed a detailed presentation on the matter recently. The presentation covered the current condition of rainwater harvesting structures in these schools, deficiencies identified during inspections, and a clear roadmap for their restoration and reactivation.

Addressing Long-Standing Gaps in Water Conservation

During the review, Gupta emphasised that the core objectives of this initiative are to bolster rainwater conservation, improve groundwater recharge, and raise awareness about water preservation among students and the wider community. She noted that a comprehensive audit of rainwater harvesting infrastructure has already been completed across all 75 CM Shri schools.

Technical teams have finished inspecting every one of these institutions. Their findings revealed that while most schools already had rainwater harvesting systems in place, a large number of these had been non-functional for years or had suffered from neglect. In several locations, collection pits were completely blocked, while others were filled with plastic waste, silt, and debris. Surprisingly, many schools were unaware that such systems even existed on their premises. The inspection also showed that in numerous cases, rainwater was simply flowing into drains, defeating the entire purpose of conservation.

Understanding the Potential of Rainwater Harvesting

Delhi receives an average of around 775 mm of rainfall each year. To put the potential into perspective, the Chief Minister explained that a rooftop spanning approximately 2,500 square feet can capture nearly 2 lakh litres of rainwater annually. This volume is enough to meet the yearly water needs of a family of five, covering drinking, gardening, cleaning, and other household requirements.

For the restoration work, the government will adopt the ‘Ehsaas’ model for rainwater harvesting in schools. This model is cost-effective, requires minimal space, and is extremely easy to maintain. It was approved by the Delhi Jal Board back in 2021. Under this system, rainwater collected from rooftops will be filtered and then channelled into tanks and borewells. This process is expected to raise groundwater levels and potentially revive dried-up borewells.

A Detailed Plan for Repair and Upgradation

To address the issues uncovered during inspections, the government has formulated a comprehensive remediation plan. The key steps include:

  • Reconnecting pipes to the correct channels to ensure proper water flow.
  • Cleaning and desilting all collection pits thoroughly.
  • Replacing old or damaged filters with new ones.
  • Creating safe access points for routine maintenance.
  • Installing improved rooftop rainwater harvesting systems in every school to ensure efficient collection and groundwater recharge.

Beyond the physical repairs, the government has also decided to allocate a separate budget for the ongoing maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems in each school. This move is aimed at ensuring the systems remain operational and well-cared-for over the long term.

Setting Ambitious Conservation Targets

The projected outcomes of this initiative are substantial. According to the Chief Minister, the rooftops of these schools have the capacity to conserve around 13 crore litres of rainwater every year. The combined capacity of all 75 schools is expected to reach approximately 5 crore litres annually.

In addition to the infrastructural work, the government plans to organise awareness programmes and workshops on water conservation for students, teachers, and parents across all these schools. Gupta stated that the administration wants to turn water conservation into a mass movement, and schools are expected to play a pivotal role in driving this change.

Building a Model for the Future

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that this initiative could serve as an important model for groundwater preservation and environmental protection in the years to come. By reviving dormant systems and embedding a culture of conservation in educational institutions, the Delhi government aims to create a lasting impact on the city’s water security.

The revival of these systems marks a practical step forward in the city’s broader water management strategy. With proper implementation and consistent upkeep, these 75 schools could become exemplary hubs of sustainability, demonstrating how institutional infrastructure can be leveraged for environmental benefit. The focus on maintenance budgets and awareness campaigns further underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that these systems do not fall into disrepair again.
