Delhi University Makes Biometric Attendance Compulsory for Staff
Delhi University has introduced a mandatory biometric attendance system for all its employees, marking a significant shift in how the institution monitors staff punctuality. Alongside this new requirement, the university administration has issued clear directives emphasizing strict adherence to working hours, with explicit warnings of disciplinary measures for those who arrive late.
Fixed Working Hours and New Attendance Protocol
Under the newly issued order, every staff member must now mark their presence using an Aadhaar-enabled biometric machine. The university has established a fixed work schedule running from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, which includes a 30-minute lunch break, bringing the total daily working hours to 8 hours and 30 minutes.
To ensure smooth operations across various departments, employees have been advised to schedule their lunch breaks between 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM. This staggered approach aims to maintain consistent staff availability throughout the day and prevent any disruption in administrative services.
Understanding the Punctuality Rules and Exemptions
The university administration has stated that this initiative is designed to reinforce discipline and enhance overall institutional efficiency. All employees are now expected to strictly follow the designated working hours without exception.
However, recognizing the practical challenges faced by staff members—particularly issues like heavy traffic congestion and delays in public transportation—the administration has shown some flexibility. After considering requests from several departments, a limited grace period has been introduced, allowing employees to arrive until 9:30 AM under specific conditions.
Stricter Compliance and Consequences for Delays
For those who clock in between 9:10 AM and 9:30 AM, the new rules require them to compensate for the delay by working additional hours on the same day to complete their full mandated work duration. This provision ensures that productivity levels remain unaffected despite the late arrival.
Employees who arrive after 9:30 AM, however, will face more serious repercussions. The university has made it clear that such individuals will be subject to strict disciplinary action, which may include deduction of either half-day or full-day leave from their available leave balance.
The administration has been unambiguous in stating that no further exemptions or relaxations will be granted regarding attendance rules. All deans, department heads, librarians, and other senior officials have been instructed to rigorously enforce the order and ensure the smooth functioning of administrative operations.
