Understanding Recurring Fever: When to Test for Dengue or Malaria

As the monsoon season arrives, health experts consistently urge people to remain vigilant about their well-being. The increased humidity and stagnant water from rainfall create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, significantly raising the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. This is why hospitals see a notable surge in patients presenting with high fever between July and October each year.

While a fever is common and often harmless, persistent or recurring episodes over several days warrant a medical consultation and proper testing. Such symptoms could indicate serious conditions like dengue or malaria, both transmitted by mosquitoes. The challenge lies in the fact that dengue, malaria, and viral fevers often share overlapping symptoms. Medication may temporarily suppress the fever, but the underlying disease can quietly worsen. This raises a critical question: how do you determine whether you need a dengue test or a malaria test when a fever strikes?

The Rising Threat of Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Monsoon

During the rainy months, cases of both dengue and malaria spike dramatically. Understanding the key differences between these diseases is the first step toward accurate diagnosis and treatment.

  • Dengue is caused by the Aedes mosquito, which typically bites during daylight hours.
  • Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, transmitted through the bite of an Anopheles mosquito, which is most active during evening and nighttime.

Both conditions involve high fever, body aches, weakness, and fatigue. However, distinguishing between them early is crucial, as their treatments and potential complications differ significantly.

When Should You Opt for a Dengue Test?

Dengue fever often begins with a sudden, high-grade fever ranging from 102°F to 104°F. Accompanying symptoms can include intense headache, pain behind the eyes, severe muscle and joint pain, profound weakness, loss of appetite, and a red skin rash. Some patients also experience nausea and vomiting.

As the disease progresses, a drop in platelet count may occur. In severe cases, this can lead to bleeding from the gums, nose, or other parts of the body—a condition known as dengue hemorrhagic fever. However, not every patient experiences a significant platelet reduction. If you develop a high fever during the monsoon season along with these specific signs, it is wise to consult a doctor and request a dengue test.

When Should You Opt for a Malaria Test?

Malaria is most commonly identified by fever accompanied by intense chills and rigors. The fever may come and go in cycles, often recurring every 48 to 72 hours depending on the parasite species. Additional symptoms include headache, vomiting, muscle pain, weakness, and extreme fatigue.

In severe instances, malaria can lead to complications such as unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, anemia (low red blood cell count), or kidney dysfunction. If you live in or have traveled to areas where malaria is prevalent, and you experience these cyclical fever patterns with chills, getting tested for malaria is essential.

Essential Precautions and Self-Care During Fever

Regardless of whether you suspect dengue or malaria, taking the right steps at home can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.

  • Medication: Use paracetamol (acetaminophen) as directed by a doctor to reduce fever. Avoid self-medicating with antibiotics or strong painkillers.
  • Hydration: Prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Oral rehydration solution (ORS), coconut water, soups, and other liquids are highly beneficial.
  • Rest: Allow your body ample time to recover by getting sufficient rest and avoiding strenuous activity.
  • Avoid certain drugs: If dengue is suspected, steer clear of ibuprofen, aspirin, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Timely testing and appropriate treatment are the most effective ways to avoid severe outcomes from these mosquito-borne diseases. Always seek professional medical advice to determine the right course of action for your specific symptoms.
