Delhi University Expands ECA Quota to 1,370 Seats for 2026 Admissions

Delhi University has increased the number of seats available under the Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) quota for the 2026-27 academic session. This year, aspiring students can compete for 1,370 seats spread across 14 different activity categories, marking a notable rise from last year’s 1,345 seats. The university has also made participation in trials mandatory for all candidates seeking admission through this quota.

Registration for undergraduate admissions under the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) is currently underway. Students interested in the ECA quota must submit a separate application alongside their general admission form. The university has confirmed that the selection process will follow the same guidelines used in the previous academic year, with no changes to the existing framework.

Trial Attendance Now Compulsory

According to Prof. Deepti Taneja, the ECA Admission Convenor, the increase in seat numbers reflects the university’s commitment to promoting holistic student development. However, she has issued a clear warning — candidates who fail to appear for their scheduled trials will be automatically disqualified from the admission process. The university will announce trial dates shortly, and no rescheduling will be permitted for absentees.

During the registration phase itself, students must upload their certificates on the CSAS portal. The university will not call any candidate for trials unless valid supporting documents are submitted. This step is crucial, as incomplete applications will not be considered under any circumstances.

How the ECA Merit List Will Be Prepared

Only certificates obtained between May 1, 2023, and April 30, 2026, will be considered valid for this admission cycle. Students can upload a maximum of five certificates, though only the best three will be used to calculate their final score. Those holding just one certificate are also eligible to apply.

The ECA merit list will be prepared separately from the general academic merit list. For most categories, the weightage distribution will be 25 percent based on the CUET score and 75 percent based on certificate evaluation and trial performance. This structure ensures that practical skills and demonstrated achievements carry substantial importance in the selection process.

Special Provisions for NSS and NCC Categories

Two categories — NSS (National Service Scheme) and NCC (National Cadet Corps) — follow a slightly different evaluation model. For these streams, the 75 percent weightage will be determined entirely by certificate evaluation, with the remaining 25 percent coming from the CUET score. Candidates applying under NSS or NCC will not be required to appear for trials, making their selection purely certificate-driven. Students in these categories must also upload up to five certificates for assessment.

Fourteen ECA Categories Offered This Year

The expanded quota covers a diverse range of activities designed to accommodate varied student interests. The 14 categories include:

  • Creative Writing
  • Dance
  • Debate
  • NSS
  • NCC
  • Digital Media
  • Fine Arts
  • Vocal Music
  • Indian and Western Instrumental Music
  • Theatre
  • Quiz
  • Yoga
  • Divinity

Students may apply for up to three categories of their choice, but admission will ultimately be granted based on only one category. A registration fee of ₹100 per category must be paid separately, meaning candidates applying to multiple categories will need to budget accordingly.

The increase in seat numbers comes as welcome news for students who excel in non-academic pursuits. With more opportunities available across diverse fields, the university aims to recognize and nurture talent beyond the classroom. The mandatory trial requirement reinforces the institution’s commitment to verifying genuine skill levels rather than relying solely on submitted documentation.

As the registration window remains open, prospective applicants are advised to complete their submissions promptly. Ensuring all certificates are properly uploaded during registration will save unnecessary complications later in the process. The university has emphasized that incomplete or delayed applications will not receive special consideration, so students must take proactive steps to meet all requirements within the stipulated timeline.

The announcement of trial dates is expected shortly, and candidates should monitor official university communications to avoid missing important updates. With the expanded seat count and clear evaluation criteria in place, this year’s ECA admissions promise to be both competitive and rewarding for talented students across all 14 categories.
