Delhi University to Launch Four-Year Multimedia and Mass Communication Program via Distance Learning

The University of Delhi is taking a significant step toward expanding access to media education. Its Campus of Open Learning (COL) is preparing to introduce a four-year undergraduate program in Multimedia and Mass Communication through distance mode. This initiative aims to bring quality media training to students who cannot attend regular on-campus classes.

The proposed curriculum has been developed using the existing media program at Indraprastha College for Women (IP College) as its foundational model. By aligning the course structure with an established, reputed college program, the university intends to ensure that distance learners receive academic content and practical exposure comparable to what regular students experience.

Approval Process Underway

The university administration has already prepared the blueprint for this new course and is moving forward with the approval process. The proposal is scheduled to be presented at the Academic Council meeting on April 15. Once the council grants its approval, the matter will be forwarded to the Executive Council for final ratification.

Professor Payal Mago, Director of the Campus of Open Learning, confirmed that the university is committed to completing all necessary formalities to launch the program in a timely manner. The goal is to offer students a well-rounded education that blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on skills relevant to the evolving media landscape.

Bridging the Gap Between Regular and Distance Education

One of the key objectives behind this initiative is to bridge the gap between regular college education and distance learning. By modeling the new course on IP College’s media syllabus, the university hopes to maintain consistent academic standards across both modes of instruction. This move is expected to benefit students who aspire to build careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and related fields but are unable to pursue full-time classroom education.

At present, distance education in media studies is largely offered at the postgraduate level. Institutions like IGNOU run MA and PG Diploma programs through their School of Journalism and New Media Studies. At the undergraduate level, journalism and digital media courses are also available. However, the introduction of a dedicated four-year degree program by DU’s SOL will significantly strengthen the options available to students seeking formal qualifications in this domain.

Expansion at the Postgraduate Level

In addition to the undergraduate program, the School of Open Learning is also preparing to expand its postgraduate offerings. Starting next academic year, an MA in English will be introduced. This program will follow a similar approval pathway, requiring clearance from the Academic Council before being presented to the Executive Council for final endorsement.

Self-learning materials for the MA English program are also being developed to support distance learners effectively. These materials are designed to be comprehensive and user-friendly, enabling students to study independently while still receiving guidance aligned with the university’s academic standards.

Currently, SOL offers postgraduate programs in Hindi, History, Political Science, Commerce, and Sanskrit. The addition of English will diversify the humanities and social sciences portfolio, catering to a broader range of student interests and career aspirations.

Why This Matters for Aspiring Media Professionals

The media and entertainment industry continues to grow rapidly, creating demand for skilled professionals who understand both traditional communication principles and modern digital tools. A structured degree program in multimedia and mass communication can equip students with essential competencies in content creation, visual storytelling, media ethics, audience analysis, and production techniques.

For students who face geographical, financial, or personal constraints that prevent them from enrolling in regular programs, distance education offers a flexible alternative. The new course at DU’s Campus of Open Learning is expected to open doors for many such learners, enabling them to pursue their academic and professional goals without compromising on quality.

As the proposal moves through the university’s administrative channels, prospective students and educators alike will be watching closely. If approved, the program could set a precedent for more professional courses being offered through distance mode in the future, further democratizing higher education in India.
