A Unique Faculty-Led Initiative Brings On-Campus Childcare to DU College

In a thoughtful move that balances professional demands with family responsibilities, the College of Vocational Studies under Delhi University has introduced a dedicated crèche facility within its campus. The initiative, driven entirely by the college’s faculty and staff association, aims to support working parents by offering a secure and dependable space for their young children during working hours.

This marks a significant first for the university, as the college becomes the first in DU to roll out such a facility specifically tailored to the needs of its teaching staff. The staff association claims this is a pioneering step within the university system, reflecting a growing awareness of the challenges educators face when juggling academic duties with parenting.

Addressing a Critical Need for Working Parents

Speaking about the motivation behind the project, the president of the college staff association, Rupesh Kumar, emphasized that childcare support at workplaces is no longer a luxury but a necessity in today’s fast-paced world. He noted that many faculty members, especially those with toddlers and infants, often struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The new crèche is expected to ease that pressure considerably, allowing teachers to focus on their professional roles without constant worry about their children’s wellbeing.

Kumar also pointed to existing government guidelines from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which recommend crèche facilities for workplaces employing women above a certain number. With women making up a substantial portion of the teaching workforce across DU colleges—and with 70 out of 132 staff members at this particular institution being women—the need for such infrastructure has long been evident.

A Self-Funded Effort with No Budgetary Support

What makes this initiative particularly commendable is that it was launched without any formal budget allocation. Members of the staff association pooled their own resources to cover the costs involved. A hall within the college premises was repurposed and transformed into a well-thought-out crèche, complete with child-friendly amenities and play areas designed to keep young ones engaged and comfortable.

While the facility was initially conceived for the college’s own faculty, it is open to teachers from other DU colleges as well. Since the service is offered free of charge, no fees are levied on users. The crèche is also equipped with surveillance cameras, ensuring an added layer of safety and peace of mind for parents.

Empowering Educators to Focus on Their Work

With the assurance that their children are being cared for in a safe environment just steps away, faculty members can now dedicate their full attention to teaching, preparing research papers, and other academic commitments. The initiative not only supports individual teachers but also contributes to a more productive and harmonious work culture within the institution.

This faculty-led effort stands as a model for other colleges and workplaces across the country, demonstrating how practical, empathetic solutions can be implemented even with limited resources. By addressing a real and pressing need, the College of Vocational Studies has set a precedent that prioritizes the wellbeing of educators while fostering a more supportive academic environment.
