India Issues Travel Advisory Amid Ebola Outbreak: Bundibugyo Strain Raises Concerns
While India currently reports no Ebola cases, the government has escalated vigilance due to international travel and global connectivity. Enhanced screening at airports, monitoring of symptomatic travelers, and alerts to health departments have been implemented to prevent any potential spread.
Current Status of the Outbreak
Ebola continues to be a significant concern for health authorities worldwide. The infectious disease, which originated in the African nations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, is intensifying public fear. In a recent report, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that while most regions in Africa face high risk, the global threat remains low for now. The current outbreak has recorded at least 600 suspected cases and 139 deaths.
Although Asian countries are not immediately threatened, ongoing international travel necessitates caution. In response to the outbreak, the India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled for May 28–31 in New Delhi has been postponed.

For Indian citizens currently residing in these affected countries, the government recommends strict adherence to local health authorities’ directives and extra caution. The Bundibugyo strain is identified as the primary driver of the current outbreak.

To date, India has not reported any Ebola cases during this outbreak. However, the disease is severe, with a high fatality rate. Currently, no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for this strain of Ebola.

Ebola was first identified in Africa in 1976. According to the WHO, the virus has periodically surfaced in Central and West Africa. In India’s history, only one case has ever been recorded. This occurred on November 10, 2014, during the West Africa global outbreak. A 26-year-old Indian national returning from Liberia tested positive during airport screening. The patient was successfully isolated and treated, with no further transmission within the country.

The WHO reports that Ebola’s case fatality rate can reach 50% or higher. The virus spreads primarily through direct contact with:
