Ebola Claims Over 400 Lives in Congo as WHO Approves First Diagnostic Test for Bundibugyo Strain

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now claimed more than 400 lives, with the virus continuing to spread across multiple regions. According to the latest report from the National Institute of Public Health, released on Thursday, 438 people have died out of 1,406 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15. This puts the mortality rate at just over 31 percent.

The Outbreak Centers on Ituri Province

The northeastern province of Ituri has emerged as the epicenter of the epidemic, accounting for more than 83 percent of all deaths. This region borders South Sudan and Uganda, where 20 cases and two fatalities have been reported. The virus has also spread into neighboring provinces, raising concerns about cross-border transmission.

Health officials have confirmed that a 24-year-old pregnant woman tested positive for Ebola after her body was secretly transported by motorcycle from the Nya Health Zone in Ituri to Kisangani. This incident highlights a critical challenge in containing the outbreak: unsafe handling of deceased individuals. Ebola remains highly contagious even after death, and improper body management has been a significant factor in the virus’s spread across Central Africa.

The Bundibugyo Strain: A Unique Challenge

This current epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. Unlike the more common Zaire strain, there is currently no approved vaccine available for this variant. This lack of a preventive measure has made the outbreak particularly difficult to manage and has heightened concerns among global health authorities.

Earlier reports had documented the first case of Ebola in France, underscoring the international reach of the crisis. However, the primary focus remains on the African nations where the virus is most active.

WHO Grants Emergency Approval for Groundbreaking Diagnostic Test

In a significant development, the World Health Organization has added the world’s first molecular diagnostic test specifically designed to identify the Bundibugyo strain to its Emergency Use Listing. This test works by detecting the genetic material—or RNA—of the virus in a patient’s blood sample, enabling rapid and accurate confirmation of infection.

The approval marks a critical step forward in the fight against the outbreak. By identifying the virus’s genetic signature, healthcare workers can quickly determine whether a person is infected, allowing for faster isolation and treatment.

Why Rapid Diagnostics Matter

Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Health Systems, Access, and Data, emphasized the importance of speed and reliability during public health emergencies. She noted that during a fast-spreading disease, timely access to quality-assured diagnostic tests can make a profound difference in curbing transmission.

Through the Emergency Use Listing process, the WHO is helping countries rapidly deploy trustworthy diagnostic tools. This allows health systems to respond more effectively, even when facing a virus strain for which no vaccine currently exists.

Key Facts About the Current Outbreak

  • Total confirmed cases: 1,406
  • Total deaths: 438
  • Mortality rate: Approximately 31 percent
  • Primary epicenter: Ituri Province, northeastern DRC
  • Neighboring countries affected: South Sudan and Uganda
  • Causative agent: Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus
  • Available vaccine for this strain: None currently approved

Challenges in Containment

Health authorities continue to face numerous obstacles in controlling the outbreak. Remote geography, limited healthcare infrastructure, and cultural practices around burial rites have all contributed to the virus’s persistence. The unsafe handling of bodies, as seen in the case of the pregnant woman transported by motorcycle, remains a particular concern.

Community engagement and education are critical components of the response. Local health teams are working to raise awareness about safe burial practices and the importance of seeking medical care at the first sign of symptoms.

A New Tool in the Fight

The newly approved diagnostic test represents a beacon of hope in an otherwise grim situation. While it does not replace the need for a vaccine, it provides a vital tool for early detection. Faster diagnosis means quicker isolation of patients, better contact tracing, and more efficient use of limited medical resources.

As the outbreak continues to evolve, the WHO and other global health organizations are ramping up efforts to support affected countries. The focus remains on containing the virus, protecting healthcare workers, and saving lives through every available means.
