Education Budget 2026: Major Push for AI, Robotics, and Skill Development
The upcoming Union Budget is expected to bring transformative changes to India’s education sector. With an ambitious vision aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 roadmap, the government is preparing to allocate a record-breaking education budget that could surpass the ₹1.50 lakh crore mark for the first time. The focus will shift beyond traditional academics toward equipping young Indians with future-ready skills in cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and semiconductor technology.
Historic Allocation for Girls’ Education and Hostel Infrastructure
In a significant move to strengthen women’s empowerment, the government is likely to announce the construction of dedicated girls’ hostels across all 800 districts of the country. These residential facilities will be strategically located near higher education institutions, ensuring that young women from rural and remote areas have access to safe accommodation while pursuing their studies.

Strengthening Higher Education and Research Institutions

The government plans to increase the number of seats in IITs while allocating dedicated budgets for specialized programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.
Centers of Excellence will receive dedicated funding to promote the effective application of AI in critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare. These centers will serve as catalysts for innovation and research, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical implementation.
Furthermore, the establishment of new Mega Skill Centers is on the horizon, designed to foster innovation and provide advanced training opportunities for the youth.
Comprehensive Upgrade of ITI Network
A master plan has been formulated to upgrade the entire network of Industrial Training Institutes across the country. This ambitious project will be supported through corporate social responsibility funds from the industry sector. In return, businesses contributing to this initiative can expect certain fiscal incentives in the budget.
The upgrade program will initially cover 1,000 ITIs, with all other institutes receiving course curricula tailored to local industry requirements. This large-scale modernization effort is expected to benefit approximately 16,000 ITIs nationwide, creating substantial employment opportunities and producing a workforce aligned with industry demands.
