Delhi Education Minister Calls for Safer School Premises and Stronger Focus on Student Well-Being

Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood, has underscored the urgent need to eliminate accident-prone zones—commonly referred to as black spots—within school campuses. Speaking at a recent interaction with school principals and heads, he stressed that no area within a school should pose a safety risk to students. Alongside physical safety, the minister placed significant emphasis on the mental health of children, urging educators to prioritize emotional and psychological well-being as part of the broader educational experience.

Minister’s Visit Highlights Commitment to Ground-Level Engagement

On Tuesday, the minister participated in a dialogue program organized by the Directorate of Education at the CM Shri School in Surajmal Vihar, covering East Zone-1 and East Zone-2. In a notable gesture of accessibility and environmental consciousness, Sood traveled by Delhi Metro from INA to Karkardooma Court and then completed the final leg of his journey to the school in an e-rickshaw. His choice of transport reflected a hands-on approach to governance and a willingness to engage with everyday civic life.

During the session, the minister engaged directly with school leaders on a wide range of issues, including the overall academic environment, the quality of instruction, availability of resources, cleanliness, safety protocols, and administrative efficiency. He issued clear directives to strengthen existing facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports infrastructure, safe drinking water systems, sanitation blocks, and digital learning tools. He also invited teachers and principals to share constructive suggestions aimed at improving the state of education in the capital.

Concerns Over Teacher Availability and Administrative Burdens

A significant portion of the discussion centered on the growing strain placed on teachers due to non-academic responsibilities. The minister acknowledged that assignments such as BLO (Booth Level Officer) duties and other administrative tasks often divert educators from their primary role of teaching. He noted that many training programs are currently scheduled during the academic session, which disrupts classroom instruction and hampers student learning outcomes.

In response, the government is exploring a revised approach to teacher training. The proposed plan includes conducting professional development programs in a phased manner during the summer vacation, with schedules announced well in advance. This would allow educators to plan their time effectively and ensure that training does not come at the cost of student instruction. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to improving teacher availability and optimizing their deployment so that schools function more effectively.

Promoting Sports and Addressing Emerging Risks

Beyond infrastructure and academic concerns, the minister also voiced apprehension over the increasing risks posed by e-waste and other environmental hazards around school areas. He called for greater attention to these emerging threats and encouraged schools to actively promote sports and physical activities among students. According to Sood, a well-rounded education must include opportunities for physical development, which in turn supports mental resilience and overall growth.

The minister’s remarks reflect a broader vision for school safety that goes beyond structural measures. By combining physical infrastructure upgrades with a focus on mental health and environmental awareness, the administration aims to create a more holistic and secure learning environment for every child in Delhi’s government schools.
