X Tightens Rules on AI-Generated War Videos as Misinformation Surges

As tensions escalate between the United States, Israel, and Iran, social media platforms are grappling with a surge in misleading content. X, the platform owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has announced stricter measures against AI-generated war videos that are spreading rapidly across the site. These clips, many of which appear disturbingly realistic, are often impossible to verify, prompting the company to take action.

Platform Overhauls Creator Revenue Program

X has introduced significant changes to its creator revenue sharing program, specifically targeting deceptive AI-made videos posted during sensitive geopolitical events. The move comes amid growing concerns that false narratives could inflame an already volatile situation in West Asia. According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, the company is revising its policies to ensure that accurate and trustworthy information reaches users during times of conflict.

Bier highlighted how the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has made it alarmingly easy to produce fake videos that look authentic. These clips can mislead viewers and amplify confusion. In one recent case, a single individual in Pakistan was found operating 31 accounts that were posting AI-generated war footage. All of those accounts had been hacked and rebranded before being used to spread the fabricated content.

New Labeling System and Penalties for Violators

Under the updated policy, any user who posts AI-generated war videos without clearly disclosing their artificial origin will face a 90-day suspension from the revenue sharing program. Repeat offenders risk permanent removal from the initiative altogether. To further promote transparency, X has rolled out a label called “Made with AI,” which will appear on posts containing AI-generated material. This tag is designed to alert viewers that the content is not real footage but a synthetic creation.

The company believes this labeling system will help curb the spread of misinformation by giving users a clear visual cue about the nature of the content they are viewing. The goal, according to X’s leadership, is to foster a more informed community, especially during periods of global instability.

Rising Platform Traffic Amid Global Uncertainty

In a related development, Bier and Musk noted that traffic on X has reached an all-time high as people flock to the platform for real-time updates on the conflict. The surge in usage comes after unverified reports about the alleged death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei added to the global uncertainty. With so much unconfirmed news circulating, the platform has become a central hub for those seeking the latest developments.

X’s crackdown on AI-generated war videos is part of a broader effort to maintain credibility and prevent the platform from being used as a tool for spreading disinformation. By enforcing stricter rules and introducing clearer labels, the company aims to strike a balance between allowing free expression and protecting users from harmful falsehoods.

The new measures reflect a growing recognition across the tech industry that AI-generated content requires proactive regulation. As the technology becomes more accessible and sophisticated, platforms are under increasing pressure to develop safeguards that can keep pace with emerging threats to information integrity.
