GATE 2026 Begins Tomorrow: Exam Schedule, Question Types, and Key Rules

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is set to conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 starting February 7. The examination will run across multiple shifts on February 8, 14, and 15 at various test centers throughout the country.

Exam Format and Structure

This year, the test will be delivered in a computer-based testing (CBT) mode, featuring a total of 30 papers. A notable addition is the new sectional paper on Energy Science under the Engineering Sciences (XE) category, expanding the scope of subjects available to candidates.

Each paper will last three hours. Candidates are strongly advised to arrive at their designated test centers well ahead of schedule. Entry gates will open 40 minutes before the examination begins, and candidates will be able to log into the system 20 minutes prior to the start to review the instructions on screen.

Strict timing rules will be enforced: no candidate will be permitted to enter the examination hall 30 minutes after the test has commenced, and leaving the venue before the conclusion of the exam is strictly prohibited.

Types of Questions in GATE 2026

Candidates may register for one or two papers this cycle. Each question paper will consist of three distinct objective-type question formats:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) – Each question provides four options, with only one correct answer. Negative marking applies for incorrect responses.
  • Multiple Selection Questions (MSQ) – These questions may have more than one correct option. No negative marking is applied, but partial credit is not awarded either.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) – Candidates must type their numerical answer using an on-screen keypad. There is no negative marking for these questions.

Understanding the Question Patterns with Examples

To clarify how each format works, consider the following illustrations:

For an MCQ, a sample question might ask which institution is organizing GATE 2026, with the correct answer being IIT Guwahati. This format tests straightforward factual or conceptual knowledge.

An MSQ might present a question about the multiples of 96, requiring candidates to select the complete set of correct options. Since multiple answers can be valid, careful reasoning is essential to identify every correct choice.

NAT questions typically involve mathematical or engineering calculations. Candidates will need to enter answers that may include decimal values. It is advisable to avoid rounding off intermediate steps and to apply rounding only to the final result for accuracy.

Important Instructions for Candidates

Before the exam day, candidates should thoroughly review all guidelines provided in their admit cards and official communications. Reaching the test center on time is critical, as the entry window closes precisely 30 minutes after the exam begins. Latecomers will not be accommodated under any circumstances.

Given the strict entry and exit regulations, planning travel accordingly is essential. Candidates should also ensure their identification documents and admit cards are ready before leaving home.

With the exam now just a day away, familiarity with the question formats and adherence to the procedural rules will go a long way in ensuring a smooth and stress-free test experience.
