Google DeepMind Partners with Indian Government to Expand AI in Science, Education, Agriculture, and Energy

At the AI Impact Summit 2026, Google unveiled a sweeping set of initiatives aimed at deepening its engagement with India and the global community. The announcements ranged from a massive infrastructure investment to new cross-border digital connectivity projects, government AI programs, skill training efforts, and safer AI products. The company laid out a clear vision for expanding its footprint in India, one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

Google Commits ₹1.36 Lakh Crore to AI Infrastructure in India

One of the most significant announcements was a commitment of $15 billion—equivalent to approximately ₹1.36 lakh crore—to build foundational AI infrastructure in India. This investment is part of a broader strategy to support the country’s digital transformation. Alongside this, Google is also developing submarine cable networks across the Pacific Ocean, Africa, and other regions to ensure robust global connectivity.

America-India Connect Initiative

To further strengthen digital links, Google introduced the “America-India Connect” initiative. This project aims to create new strategic fiber-optic routes connecting the United States, India, and parts of the Southern Hemisphere. The goal is to enhance the reach, stability, and reliability of digital connectivity across these regions, enabling smoother data flow and more resilient communication networks.

AI Partnerships with Government and Local Institutions

Google emphasized that strong infrastructure alone is not enough—investing in people and institutions is equally critical. According to the company’s data, 74% of government employees worldwide are already using AI tools, yet only 18% believe their governments are deploying the technology effectively. To bridge this gap, Google launched several targeted programs:

  • A $30 million “Global AI for Government Innovation Impact Challenge” through Google.org, designed to accelerate the use of AI in public services.
  • A $30 million “AI for Science Impact Challenge,” aimed at speeding up scientific research and discovery.

Google DeepMind has also entered into a new partnership with the Indian government and local institutions. This collaboration will provide access to cutting-edge AI models and empower innovation hubs with generative AI assistants. Additionally, in coordination with the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Google is establishing the “Google Center for Climate Technology.” This center will focus on developing AI-driven climate solutions to address pressing environmental challenges.

Boosting Employment and Innovation Through AI Skills

Google reported that it has already trained over 100 million people in digital skills globally. Now, the company is rolling out even more ambitious skilling programs tailored to the Indian context.

AI Professional Certificate Program

The AI Professional Certificate program is designed to help individuals learn how to apply AI in the workplace. In India, this initiative will be delivered in partnership with Wadhwani AI, targeting students and early-career professionals to equip them with future-ready skills.

Collaboration with Karmayogi Bharat

Through a partnership with Karmayogi Bharat, Google is supporting the “Mission Karmayogi” initiative, which aims to prepare the civil services for a technology-driven future. Google Cloud is providing secure infrastructure for the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which supports over 2 crore government employees across more than 800 districts. Training materials are being made available in over 18 Indian languages to ensure accessibility at every level.

AI Will Transform Every Sector, Says Sundar Pichai

During the summit, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared his perspective on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. He stated that AI will improve people’s lives in every domain they interact with daily—from education and healthcare to industry, services, and digital communication. According to Pichai, nearly every sector and context will undergo significant change in the coming years. While it may be difficult to fully imagine the extent of this transformation today, he noted that its impact will be both profound and far-reaching.

Pichai’s remarks underscore a broader industry view that AI is not merely a technical tool but a force capable of reshaping society and the economy. As these initiatives unfold, India stands to benefit from enhanced digital infrastructure, deeper government collaboration, and a workforce better prepared for the age of intelligent automation.
