Google Takes Legal Action Against AI-Powered Scam Network
In a significant move against cybercrime, Google has filed a lawsuit in a New York court targeting a suspected Chinese criminal network accused of exploiting artificial intelligence for large-scale fraud. According to the lawsuit, the group operating under the name “Outsider Enterprise” was based in China and coordinated its activities through Telegram. The network reportedly used Gemini to develop 131 phishing kits, which allowed them to rapidly generate counterfeit websites. Investigators claim the operation produced over 9,000 fake sites that closely mimicked legitimate platforms and services.
These fraudulent websites were designed to impersonate well-known brands and government services, including Google itself, YouTube, the United States Postal Service, and New York’s E-ZPass toll collection system. The primary goal was to deceive users into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, banking credentials, and other personal data.
Scale of the Fraud
The scope of the scam is staggering. Google reported that within just two weeks in May, approximately 2.5 million fraudulent SMS messages were sent to Android users. These texts contained links directing recipients to the fake websites. Throughout the entire campaign, the network generated more than 1 million malicious URLs designed to trap unsuspecting victims.
What makes this case particularly alarming is the speed and efficiency with which AI enabled the scammers to operate. Creating convincing fake websites and crafting deceptive messages has become significantly easier with generative AI tools, allowing cybercriminals to scale their operations rapidly.

Google has approached the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York seeking an order to block the network’s digital infrastructure and shut down their online operations. The tech giant is not acting alone in this fight. Several major American telecommunications companies, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, have joined forces with Google and the FBI to dismantle the scam network.
