Google Uncovers ‘DarkSword’ Malware Targeting iPhone Users

Security researchers at Google have issued a critical warning about a new and highly dangerous piece of malware known as “DarkSword.” This sophisticated threat is designed to infiltrate iPhones and steal sensitive personal data, including private messages and cryptocurrency wallet details, with just a single click on a compromised website.

How DarkSword Operates

The mechanism behind DarkSword is alarmingly simple yet devastatingly effective. If an iPhone user accidentally visits an infected webpage, the spyware activates immediately in the background as the page loads. It begins harvesting data without requesting any permissions or displaying any warning signs. The entire process is silent and rapid, leaving the victim completely unaware that their device has been compromised.

The Attack Vector

According to Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG), the malware exploits vulnerabilities in older versions of Apple’s operating system. The attack does not require the user to download any apps or click on suspicious links beyond visiting the malicious website. Once the page is rendered, the malware executes its code and begins extracting information.

Who Is Behind the Threat?

Investigations by Google and other cybersecurity firms trace the origins of DarkSword to a hacker group identified as UNC6353, which is believed to operate out of Ukraine. The group’s primary objective is not to maintain long-term access to the infected device but rather to steal data quickly and erase all traces of their activity. This hit-and-run approach makes detection and forensic analysis extremely challenging.

Which iPhone Models Are at Risk?

Google’s report indicates that DarkSword primarily targets iPhones running older iOS versions. Devices operating on iOS 18.4 through iOS 18.7 are particularly vulnerable. Users who have not updated to the latest iOS release are at the highest risk of infection, as these older systems contain security flaws that the malware actively exploits.

What Data Can Be Stolen?

Once DarkSword gains access to an iPhone, it can extract a wide range of sensitive information within moments. The malware is capable of accessing:

  • Saved passwords and login credentials
  • Photos stored in the device gallery
  • Browser history and search activity
  • Private messages from apps like WhatsApp and Telegram
  • Cryptocurrency wallet details and transaction data

This means the attack goes far beyond simple surveillance. Hackers can use the stolen information to commit identity theft, financial fraud, or drain cryptocurrency accounts, potentially causing severe economic harm to victims.

Why DarkSword Is Particularly Dangerous

What sets DarkSword apart from other malware is its use of a “fileless” attack method. Similar to an older exploit kit called Corona, this malware does not download any new files or applications onto the device. Instead, it leverages legitimate tools and processes already present in the iOS environment to steal data. After completing its mission, the malware automatically deletes all evidence of its presence. Even if a user restarts their phone, the infection leaves no trace, making it nearly impossible to detect through conventional means.

How to Protect Your iPhone

To defend against DarkSword and similar threats, users should take immediate action. The most effective step is to update the device to the latest iOS version. Checking for updates in the Settings app and installing them promptly closes the security gaps that the malware exploits.

For those unable to update their device due to technical limitations, enabling Lockdown Mode provides an additional layer of protection. This feature, found in the Security settings, significantly restricts certain device functions and blocks many common attack vectors.

Practicing safe browsing habits is also essential. Avoid clicking on links from unknown sources or visiting websites that appear suspicious. Stick to trusted sites and remain cautious when browsing unfamiliar content.

By staying vigilant and keeping software up to date, iPhone users can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to the DarkSword malware campaign.
